#ThickTrunkTuesday

This beautiful, ancient yellow #cedar tree has a massive, moss covered trunk. It is estimated at over 500 years old. There are very few #ElderTrees of this scale found outside of protected parks on Southern Vancouver Island now. The few remaining unprotected old growth forest tracts should be conserved for stability & longevity of our wild, ancient ecosystems & for the future generations to enjoy/admire/study.

The need to protect old growth forests has been the case for decades but even more important in present times because of accelerated climate change & the increased greedy desperation of corporate ecociders & our governments who aid/abet the pillaging which destroys wild environments that are essential for humans to sustain our lives on Earth. Valuable medicines are found & several medicines have yet to be found in these old growth, coastal temperate, wild rainforests. We need to protect these ancient forests for the above listed & many more important reasons.

#Backroads on #DididahtTerritory.
This is part of the #SanJuanRiver & forests in the valley. The #watershed area is under ongoing #ecological threats by industrial #clearcut #logging. This is near #CarmannahWalbran #BritishColumbia provincial park.
The forests here are longtime foraging, mating & birthing grounds for the #CowichanValley Roosevelt elk herd. The San Juan is an important salmon bearing river. The old growth forests here are home to several #SpeciesAtRisk & #EndangeredSpecies.
There is ongoing eco activism work to try & protect more of the forests & #waterways in this #wilderness valley on Southern #VancouverIsland.

I spent 3.5 months here in my first #CivilDisobedience action in my teens. Which led to a lifelong commitment to protect all old growth in BC.

#BritishColumbia #FirstNations are initiating an #emergency #salmon #TaskForce to investigate the impact on the #sockeye salmon due to last week’s #Chilcotin River #landslide.

“Chilcotin Rivers are kind of our identity,” Nits’ilʔin (Chief) Francis Laceese, Tl’esqox said at a press conference on Tuesday.

“Same with the salmon, you know, that’s basically who we are. That’s our biggest food source.”

#Tŝilhqotin National Government (TNG) is calling on all levels of government, downstream First Nations, the #PacificSalmonCommission, and other nations and states, especially #Alaskan #fisheries, to take all precautionary measures possible to conserve Tŝilhqot’in territory-bound salmon, and to immediately cease from fisheries that may impact these stocks, until the impacts from the landslide and breach are fully understood.

A massive landslide came down last Wednesday, damming the Chilcotin River, which leads into the #FraserRiver

The #Education for #Nature#Vietnam #ENV, one of the country’s #pioneering social organisations in #wildlife #conservation, has released a 2 minute video clip titled "Chim troi keu cuu" (wild birds cry out for help) to urge the #community to refrain from #WildBird consumption and join #protection efforts.

The clip exposes haunting and cruel moments of the widespread destruction of the feathered animals, giving only a glimpse of the acts prevalent in many localities nationwide.

Vietnam is among the 25 countries with the richest #diversity of wild #birds species globally. However, #poaching and #IllegalTrading pose serious threats to hundreds of #indigenous and #migratory bird species in the country. In localities such as #QuangNinh and #ThaiBinh in the north and #ThuaThien - #Hue in the central region, #poachers employ sophisticated methods including decoys and birdsong mimicking devices to lure the animals, followed by nets, traps, or guns for capture. This rampant hunting seriously jeopardises Vietnam's #biodiversity.

Vietnam+ (VietnamPlus) · Clip calls for protection of wild birds The Education for Nature – Vietnam (ENV), one of the country’s pioneering social organisations in wildlife conservation, has released a two-minute video clip titled "Chim troi keu cuu" (wild birds cry out for help) to urge the community to refrain from wild bird consumption and join protection efforts.

The #CowichanRiver #estuary is one of the largest & most important in #BritishColumbia. The #watershed drains 90,000 hectares & provides #CriticalHabitat to dozens of #fish species, including #steelhead, #Chinook, #chum, #coho & #PinkSalmon, as well as brown, #cutthroat & #RainbowTrout. But the #Cowichan’s troubles are by no means unique; they are a #CaseStudy for a much larger problem.

#TimberCompanies store #LogBooms all along the #BCcoast, says Jamieson Atkinson, a fish #biologist & program manager for the #Aquatic #Research & #Restoration Centre at #BritishColumbiaConservationFoundation. “It’s shocking.” While #estuaries make up less than 3% of British Columbia’s coast, they provide rich #habitat for 80% of the province’s coastal #wildlife. The #FraserRiver estuary, near #Vancouver on the mainland, supports more than 300 species of #birds & 80 species of fish & #shellfish for at least part of their life cycles.

#BigLonelyDoug layered over #deforestation #clearcuts 😢 in #CowichanValley
All the #OldGrowthTrees, in what used to be fully forested area, were razed down. This kind of reckless profits before planet #ClearcutLogging absolutely devastates #ecosystems & it annihilates #WildlifeHabitats.

Please join the ongoing fight to #SaveOldGrowth & for #BCForestryReform. We seriously need to transition & work on #NatureFirst #WildFirst solutions for a more ethical, responsible & sustainable future.

If there is some sort of reckoning after we die, I will face the Creator and tell them honestly that I did everything I could to protect those weaker/less fortunate than myself and to protect Creation (with the exception of a few weak moments). We should all strive to live that way. If we're only accountable to the #Bumblebees, I'm fine with that. To me, #NatureIsGod. To go against Nature is to go against The Creator. Life on Earth is so precious. We should put #NatureFirst, #EarthFirst!

(But there’s still more that could be done, Dawe said. She’d like to see the government restrict industrial projects in critical habitat for endangered or threatened species as new laws and policies are being developed.
“A lot of wildlife just can’t handle two more years of a free for all,” she said)
