Part of the area by one of my fave & free #backroads #wilderness #camping & recreation spots in #Ditidaht territory. The backroads in both the North & South #Cowichan areas have several fantastic recreational camping sites which are free to stay at - zero amenities so you need to be prepared to pack in what you need & pack it back out. I like the backroads spots better than fully maintained & easier to access sites. I rarely see anyone else near me when camping at backroads sites.
#photoOfTheDay is something a bit different! This large sculpture was one of several unique ones on display at a rural residence on the Northern California coast. To say that it caught my attention the first time we drove past it would be an understatement! Mr. Skeleton was about 8 feet tall IIRC.

In the late 1870s an Englishman, Harry Pye, had a contract to haul freight to the Warm Springs Indian Reservation. He found 'float' (silver) while evading raiding parties. He built a little cabin (now vacation rental).
He never 'struck it rich.' In fact, his mining career ended before it began. Pye was about 10 feet into the prospecting project when he was ambushed by a band of Apache, led by Victorio. When Pye drew his gun, it jammed.

This is part of the #SanJuanRiver & forests in the valley. The #watershed area is under ongoing #ecological threats by industrial #clearcut #logging. This is near #CarmannahWalbran #BritishColumbia provincial park.
The forests here are longtime foraging, mating & birthing grounds for the #CowichanValley Roosevelt elk herd. The San Juan is an important salmon bearing river. The old growth forests here are home to several #SpeciesAtRisk & #EndangeredSpecies.
There is ongoing eco activism work to try & protect more of the forests & #waterways in this #wilderness valley on Southern #VancouverIsland.
There's a bit of snow when you go up higher into the mountains near #Koksilah Skutz line 1 turn off backroads. We didn't have chains on truck so didn't go further up - unsafe to drive up without chains on tires.
This is not progress.
This is not civilized.
We need to protect remaining #OldGrowth #AncientForests. They're our 2nd largest #CarbonSinks - after the giant kelp forests in the oceans. #Clearcutting forests should be banned.
Found a small #waterfall on #ShawniganLake #backroads. This runs off of the #Cowichan River.
I love traveling around on backroads and finding cool, unexpected scenes like this. Taken in Benton, PA.

Cabezon Peak | Cabezon means “big head” in Spanish, and it is aptly named. It is the largest of several dozen widely scattered rocky monoliths, called the Rio Puerco necks.
Red rock and spires south of the Chuska mountains in western #NewMexico, on Navajo land. The skinny one is Cleopatra's Needle. The thicker one is the Venus Needle.
