Allll that money & alll those resources for...a technology which isn't even completely understood by its Turing award-winning creators (let alone the #tech bros running the companies), just to be the next corporate lemming to jump into the 'efficiency through #ai' money pit:

'So far in 2025- #DATACENTER INVESTMENTS ARE OUTPACING CONSUMER SPENDING, which is notable since consumer spending usually makes up 70% of #GDP'

Aaand, it's probably what I'll be doing next year...😅

Is the #GenerativeAI bubble about to burst?

by Matthew Tyson, Aug 20, 2025

Excerpt: "The AI money trap

"We don’t have to look far for a more contrarian perspective. Economist Paul Kedrosky, for one, notes that capital expenditure on data centers has driven 1.2% of national GDP, acting as a kind of stimulus program. Without that investment, he writes, the US economy would be in contraction.

"Kedrosky describes an 'AI #datacenter spending program' that is 'already larger than peak telecom spending (as a percentage of GDP) during the dot-com era, and within shouting distance of peak 19th century railroad infrastructure spending.'

"Virtually all #AI spend flows into #Nvidia in one way or another. This is reflected in its recent valuation as the first publicly traded company to break $4 trillion in market capitalization (second up was #Microsoft).

"To put that number in context, market observers such as Forbes described it as being greater than the GDP of Canada or the annual global spending on defense.

"Nvidia alone accounts for more than 7% of the value of the S&P 500. AI gadfly Ed Zitron calls it the 'AI money trap.' "

Ok I hear you: you want a photo of Duck in the datacenter. While I can't give you that I can provide a realistic video re-enactment!

I've tried to stay accurate but was limited to available materials in my home workshop. Most obvious change is that a chicken (a hen, to stay as close to reality as possible) is cosplaying as Duck. Otherwise I think we've captured the datacenter setting rather well.

I hope this satisfies your curiosity.

note: video is loud & flashy

@ekamil The same reason why #META builds a huge #dataCenter in an arid region of #Spain and aggravates the desertification. The land is cheap (no farming possible), the important politicians may be corrupt, the promise for jobs where you have high unemployment, and the public is not interested in what happens "in the nowhere". inspain.news/opening-water-guz
