Apart from the general absence of dynastic politics encompassing primarily marriages, the main difference between the European and Ottoman diplomatic venue lay
mostly in cultural practices which can be observed right at the beginning of the diplomatic missions to #Constantinople.

Before entering the Ottoman capital, European #envoys
were officially welcomed by both Ottoman functionaries and representatives of other non-Muslim states who escorted them through the gates of the city following mutually agreed ceremonial routine based on old traditions. Throughout their stay there, the envoys’ capability of digesting Ottoman rules of interaction was tested on several occasions. (5/6)

The SublimePorte was a very specific diplomatic arena. The presence of #emdiplomats there increased significantly between the 16th and 18th century. During this time, European views of the #OttomanEmpire changed, redefining the sultan’s realm from a dangerous and largely unknown imperium to a potential ally with attractive cultural trademarks. The European representatives and diplomatic outposts in #Constantinople remained important political links to the outside world for the #sultan

Following the pioneering example of medieval #Venice, several European states created a permanent diplomatic outpost at the sultan’s #court, as Zsuzsanna Cziráki outlined in her article on the #SublimePorte as a sphere of diplomatic interaction:

Like many other #emdiplomats he then moved from administration to #emdiplomacy. Alexander von Greiffenklau zu Vollrads’s diplomatic career started with less important missions to #Prussia and as the Emperor’s representative at the Polish #court. In 1643 he was appointed Imperial resident minister at the #HighPorte, where he died in 1648.

It is, however, interesting that the #Emperor in contrast to other European powers such as #France or #England only dispatched a resident, a lower rank #diplomat to #Constantinople. The unclear positions of residents within the hierarchy of #emdiplomacy led to permanent ceremonial conflicts with other #diplomats there. (3/6)

#emdiplomat of the day: Alexander von Greiffenklau zu Vollrads (?-1648)

While the eyes of #earlymodern European politics were on the two German provinicial cities of Münster and Osnabrück where more than 140 #emdiplomats tried to negotiate a #peaceTreaty, the day-to-day business of most #diplomats continued elsewhere.

One of these #diplomats who was not in the spotlight was Alexander von Greiffenklau zu Vollrads, the Imperial representative in #Constantinople. (1/6)

⬆️ [Higher up in 🧵] >> Early 1915: #Russia tells #EntentePartners it wants #Constantinople (now #Istanbul) & #Dardanelles; #Britain & #France reluctantly agree.

For centuries, Russia wanted access to warm water ports in the Mediterranean and fought with #Turkey for that access. It finally got one in #Syria after military intervention following #ArabSpring to prop up Bashar #Assad.

Assad's collapse threatens that Russian naval port as well as an air base.

Everybody is talking about removing #Trump from ballots in #Election2024 based on his role in #Jan6 insurrection. That certainly a good thing.

But also, let's not forget what he did at the #US-#Russia #Summit in #Helsinki in 2018, which #CIA director John #Brennon called #nothingShortOfTreasonous ➡️ npr.org/2018/07/17/629601233/t

Can't help but compare this to Russia's attempts in #WWI after #ThievesBanquet (below)

Try replacing #DjemalPasha with #Trump & #Constantinople with #Kyiv. What would he do?

⬆️ At the #ThievesBanquet, #Britain coyly agreed to let #Russia swallow #Constantinople.

After the war, #Kitchener worried that once Russia got Constantinople, it would use the #Caliphate and plot to destroy the #British Empire.

So he wanted to:

1. Cut a swath through #Mesopotamia (#Iraq) into #India

2. Choose an #Arabian Caliph, without regard to #Shia-#Sunni divide in #Islam

He thought since #Mohammad was Arabian, so should his successor. This has rubbed #Shia #Iran & #Iraq the wrong way
