>> So it was Turkey that antagonized BOTH Arabs and British.

Under threat from #CUP, and still under the #TurkishYoke, #Arabs approached #Britain and offered to revolt against #Turks in exchange for British recognition of #Arab independence from #OttomanEmpire.

British had rebuffed Arabs too, just as they had rebuffed #Zionists, but Turkish entry in #WWI changed everything and Britain agreed to work with Arabs.

THAT led to the #ArabRevolt, NOT #McMahonHusseinCorrespondence

It took a plane to spot it.

A #hurricane so small that it could not be observed by #satellite formed this weekend, surprising #meteorologists and even forecasters at the #NationalHurricaneCenter.

#HurricaneOscar developed on Saturday near #Turks and #Caicos, and to the northeast of #Cuba, in the extreme southwestern #AtlanticOcean. As of Saturday evening, hurricane-force winds extended just 5 miles (8 km) from the center of the storm.

#Egypt freelancing in the #Israel-#Hamas #ceaseFire agreements is somewhat like the #British Foreign Office freelancing in the #KitchenerTelegram during #WWI. British FO went beyond instructions, and ended up extending British offer not merely to #Arabia, but to #Palestine as well, when the latter was not at all intended ➡️ mastodon.social/@rameshgupta/1

#Britain did not owe Palestinians anything because the latter never fought the #Turks to help the British in WWI

I’m not making this remark callously.

#GrandSharif #Hussein of #Mecca actually fought the #Ottoman #Turks for #Arab independence.

He knowingly put his personal life and the lives of his 3 sons in mortal danger. So the freedom would have been totally earned.

What was the role of #Palestinians in this struggle during #WWI? Did they fight for their freedom or did they just wanted it handed to them on a platter?

Oh wait. In 1947, it was handed to them on a platter, but they kicked it

>> why should we accept anything Lord #Balfour did to support an imperialist power's attempt to win #WWI?

#Britain and allies won #WWI. They offered #Arabs & #Turks terms that they rejected

— Britain and allies won #WWII as well. They and #UN offered a #TwoStateSolution but Arabs & #Palestinians rejected that

— Arabs & Palestinians lost 1948 war & 1967 war & …

Losers don't get to dictate terms 🙂

>> #Palestine already had Palestinians for whom this was home.

It also already had #Jews for whom this was their home.

They were repeatedly driven out. Never forget.

>> Of course, their land was conquered by various empires

"Their" land also means land of Judah.Never forget.

>> and then handed over to the "Israelis" instead of returned to them.

#Turks lost that land to #AlliedPowers in WWI

>> #Israel shouldn't have happened.

What should have happened?

In #WWI #Turkey was given multiple offers to reject #Zionism by both #Britain & #US. They rejected it, even though plenty of #Turks favored a separate peace with #EntentePowers.

After #Holocaust and #WWII, #Jews had to be rehabilitated. The West, including #US took in many of them.

Why couldn't others go back to their ancestral land? See #Hamas Charter for comparable #Muslim claims

>> #Palestine was seized by #Zionist project founded on #BalfourDeclaration

#Turks lost Palestine to #British in #WWI after breaking neutrality & joining #CentralPowers against #Allies

Even after Balfour Declaration, #Britain offered #Turkey to let its flag fly over Palestine, but Turkey refused ➡️ mastodon.social/@rameshgupta/1

Meanwhile, #Jews were being exiled and killed everywhere.

⬆️ #OttomanEmpire - 2

Besides #Jews, there were 3 other broad categories of people in the region.

#Imperial Masters, the #Turks
#Palestinian #Peasants, #Fellahin
#Bedouin #Nomads, the "Pure #Arabs"

The boundaries & borders of #Palestine & #Arabian lands were VAGUE TO ALL.

This is why #Kitchener's offer for Arab independence from #TurkishYoke in exchange for Arab uprising in WWI was based on vague borders.

Arabs dreamed up #DamascusProtocol on their own with no regard to Palestinians

⬇️

#OttomanEmpire - 1

When the #Turks conquered #Arabia, #Arabs lost their religious #Caliphate to #Turkish Sultans, who merged powers of #Sultan and #Caliph

For 400 years before the #GreatWar #WWI, #Palestinians were under despotic Ottoman #occupation, subject to onerous #TurkishYoke

For 4 centuries, occupation was NOT an issue

End of WWI finally brought independence to Arabs (WWII for Palestinians), but they turned that #independence into #grievance against #Jewish presence in #MiddleEast
