At my garden plot — I think this is a female Valley Carpenter Bee. She was really big!
It’s a lady bug party!
Observing the natural rhythms of the garden brings me such joy.

In small victories at the community garden, one of the guys who always uses black plastic has now adopted cardboard and mulch. Looks like several others are doing same. I'm going to credit all my annoying, passive-aggressive comments on garden's Facebook page. #CommunityGarden #GrowYourOwn #plastic #cardboard #mulch #garden #allotment #weeds
Tiny session at one of the local community gardens yesterday - have not had much time to devote to this one lately, fortunately a few other people have been able to do some upkeep. So glad we went heavy on the perennials in the early days, so there was rhubarb and perennial leeks ready for harvest. Fruit trees and fruit bushes are coming on.

Another gardener was asking me about the wasps in/near their plot. They thought it was yellow jackets. Highly unlikely.
Yellow jackets are aggressive assholes, and you won’t be able to casually garden around them.
It’s probably paper wasps — shy, docile pollinators.
But these two wasps look very much alike. Except for the color of the antennae; yellow jackets have black ones, and paper wasps have orange ones and their face has more yellow.
Today at the community garden, a fellow gardener told us that she carefully moved the cottontail nest (with babies) in her plot to right outside in a plastic pot. Please pray for the poor cottontail mom who now has to find her babies and move them to a safer place.
We also have a cottontail nest in our plot. We just let them use our plot as a safe nursery. They’ve been nesting in our plot every year, we know the drill. We run a #humaneGarden.

Spring in the garden — bring on the ladybugs!
My 10x25' plot at the community garden. Currently 2 rows of fava beans, 3 rows of carrots, 4 rows of shelling peas, and 10 tomatoes. Central portion covered with bird netting to keep out the birds and the squirrels. #CommunityGarden #GrowYourOwn #allotment #garden #gardening #swarthmore #peas #fava #tomatoes

Shifting focus, pt. 2. Checked in on my favorite lilac bush (see previous posts) and found ANOTHER patch of lilac buds just getting started (a later-blooming variety?). I’m excited to see their progress as well! Also: tulip.

Shifting focus, pt. 1. Passed by a local garden to admire the bluebells (and tulips), still looking fresh on this drizzly day.

we’re getting some consistent open garden hours going!
someone will be around on Fridays and Saturdays this month, tending to the garden, working on projects, and happy to answer questions or visit with neighbors. foundseed open garden hours are welcome to anyone, to come by, help out, donate, or sit on our rug with us.
We plan to do a biochar lesson this Saturday, after dusk, so come by if you want to learn!
Spring flowers in my garden plot.
@KevinCo It’s great that you do regular earthworm surveys of your plots.

More lilac buds waking up! I’m ridiculously taken with this bush, just minding its own business in a community garden next to a bus stop, but it’s lovely to see the little things open up day by day. A sign of life and beauty, of hope in a time that needs it.
