@Lili ja, #CellBroadcast geht an alle Endgeräte.
- Per Spezifikation gehen auch Notrufe ohne SIM, nur wurde dies wegen Missbrauch in Deutschland explizit abgeschaltet!
@Lili ja, #CellBroadcast geht an alle Endgeräte.
And now we have Cellbroadcastd 0.0.2 as well, which fixes a build failure on arm64 and gets the symbol file in order (thanks @agx !)

Cellbroadcastd 0.0.1 was released yesterday
#cbd provides the following:
- persistent storage of received #CellBroadcast messages
- notifications for user interfaces/DEs to handle
- set channels to subscribe to (based on country)
- CLI tool for inspection/debugging purposes
https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/devrtz/cellbroadcastd/-/releases/v0.0.1
Many thanks to @NGIZero for funding, @agx for involving me and tons of review and @snwh for UI design!
@devrtz @NGIZero @snwh …and as a service to user interfaces/DEs that don't want to add explicit #CellBroadcast support #cbd can now send notifications. Just enabling the setting is enough.
This is configurable on a severity level so you could use a system modal dialog for high severity events and notifications for low severity ones. This is (likely) how we'll wire it up in #phosh once everything has settled in.
Another #Cellbroadcast bit coming to #phosh / #LinuxMobile. The results of the users choice are set in the modem via a small daemon based on information we're getting from mobile-broadband-provider-info. That way only the tiny UI bit is DE specific, the other bits can be reused on other platforms as is. @devrtz is working on adding persistent storage to keep a message history.
Thanks to @NGIZero for supporting this and @snwh for the UI design.

Mostly #phosh/#LinuxMobile (e.g. alarm-clock, #feedbackd, #Cellbroadcast) related but also some #Debian bits.
to everyone supporting this!
Dazu braucht's keine nichtssagende Wall-of-Text.
As part of or work on #Cellbroadcast we've documented our current test setup: https://codeberg.org/Phosh/gsm-cell-testing using #osmocom for the mobile network parts and #ansible for deploying #ModemManager on the devices, performing the tests and checking the results.
Thanks to @NGIZero for supporting our work on this.
@MishaVanMollusq @Unixbigot reminds me of the #Ahr valley flooding which killed a lot of folks because none of the media and civil protection talked about it and #CellBroadcast was shutdown years ago...
My advice: Keep to it and ideally be ready to GTFO up hill / to the side on a minute's notice!
Seriously, there's a reason why every other nation at the very least keeps the absolute minimum of bandwith necessary to maintain #2G & #3G service for #EmergencyCalling.
In fact, #Germany learned the hard way that #CellBroadcast and #PTY31 / #RDS - based #alarms and #sirens are not replaceable.
@abuerkl also #CellBroadcast reaktivieren wie in #Deutschland???
Tomorrow (Saturday) in Austria: Emergency warnings get tested at noon! Sirens AND mobile phones
@aslmx You're incorrect - at least partially.
It was reactivated as until the late 2000s and early 2010s it was actually available in all 4 (back then!) major networks.
I remember it fondly because I did use the location feature offered in #Eplus's Network extensively...
AFAICT #CellBroadcast is only offered as a tunneled service in #4G & #5G networks, so the same issues of #VoLTE apply as *both 4G & 5G were designed for a premium mobile data service and not as a simple replacement of #2G and/or #3G...
And in #Germany it took a Natural Disaster with a triple digit bodycount for #CellBroadcast to be reactivated per legal mandate and #2G to remain online...
The fact that Telstra was unable to say how many devices roamed their Network should be seen as criminal incompetence cuz asking something like: "How many foreign devices are #roaming in your network?" is a standard #FAQ I'd expect them to put into their public financial reports - even as a #footnote re: #revenue [i.e. total devices, total revenue, average Calls / SMS / data per roaming device] cuz that's standard #metrics every #Telco & #ISP does create anyway...
A #PSA for anyone living, staying, entering or even travelling to/from #Australia:
Apparently, #Australia decided to mandate it's #GSM systems to be shutdown because some #GalaxyBrainChair wanted to yeet #2G & #3G and demand everything to use #4G & #5G when in fact #VoLTE support is spotty at best and #EmergencyCalling oftentimes is explicitly hardcoded to not use #WIFIcalling or VoLTE as providing #triangulation and #LocationData via #SS7 is a desired feature when someone calls EMS, Fire Dept or the Police for help...
So essentially #tourists and anyone who hasn't an explicitly fully VoLTE-functional device they tested and verified to also do #EmergencyCalls via VoLTE are fecked with no reception when they need it the most!
This WILL KILL PEOPLE!!!
As much as we want to bitch about #GSM & #GPRS / #UMTS being #outdated and #inefficient, there are reasons to at least keep 2G available - ranging from lower power consumption to higher resilience in emergency situations.
#NewZealand for example does shutdown non-#EmergencyCalls during severe #Earthquakes so that people trapped and/or in need of urgent assistance can get through to dispatch operators and everyone else has to get in line and take a number aka. use #SMS or if existing #Internet to say "I'm fine!"...
If the Ozzies really need that juicy #UHF #SubGHz #Spectrum it's totally feasible to instead change the #allocations and reconfigure #CellularNetworks to use lesser bandwith for 2G (i.e. only keeping the absolute mininum of channels available for any service) and thus clear up space...
And to add insult to injury, Australia passed a #NorthKorea|n-alike #CellPhone #ImportBan for any device that doesn't do i.e. the bespoke proprietary garbage that i.e. #Telstra, #Vodafone and #Optus do with the #baseband modems of their #branded devices...
Seriously, which #TechIlliterate dickhead decided it's a good idea to do that #3Gshutdown in Australia without even a basic 2G network up and running at all?
@fell @postmarketOS @GrapheneOS that's because #GSM devices can connect to networks even without a #SIM (they need to in order to establish registration & roaming handshakes)...
#CellBroadcast as in todays #NationalAlertDay doesn't distinguish between the devices or SIM status as it literally sends the message to everyone in range.
Today was "Bundesweiter Warntag" in Germany so a good point in time to test #ModemManager's & #phosh's upcoming #cellbroadcast support .
The sounds emitted by #feedbackd are only stubs (and you don' t hear the haptic in the video but I promise it's there ).
There's three messages because the CBMs are sent out on three different channels.
Thanks @NGIZero for supporting my work on this!
Welp, I can confirm that cell broadcast warnings do not work on my @postmarketOS OnePlus 6T.
I wonder if anyone in the #LinuxMobile community has already began implementing it?
However, to my very surprise, my Pixel 4a with @GrapheneOS still received the warning without a SIM card?! Huuuuuh?!
Either way, I have been warned.
