Hits from my Tuesday morning inbox:

1. An unsupervised, LLM-generated, and hence completely useless set of recommendations about how to implement #accessible hovercards.

2. An email suggesting that accessible websites are ugly websites, and therefore we need some sort of cookie in everyone's browser describing what access technology they use so they can be directed into the appropriate "ghetto". This was sent to the #ARIA Authoring Practices mailing list for some reason.

Considering going back to bed.

Built a way to view my #SheffieldSU's Council votes. I don't really know how useful people will actually find it, but it is very pretty. Happy to have feedback! oliviastarstuff.github.io/su-c

It should also be mobile responsive now, but I've made some changes that may mean the options menu would be poking out a bit on mobile.

Hopefully it's good for screen readers and I used the right #aria tags. #disability lmk!

SU COUNCIL VOTING RECORD VISUALISER In the middle are 77 nodes arranged in a flat bottom hexagonal grid in three colours, green, yellow and red, each colour has a corresponding shape. Each node also has initials, they represent the councillor that the node represents and the colour is their vote. Each councillor is groups with other councillors representing the same type or faculty. there are 10 groups. 6 for the faculties or specialised academic councillors and 4 for the SU related or representational councillors. on the left are two panels, one labelled Choose policy which is collapsable that contains two drop down menus to select the year and policy name, currently set at 2023/2024, Transparency and Voting, respectively. below it in the same panel there is an outlink to the policy details and below that in the same panel is another collapsable drawer of options, checkbox inputs to hide parts of the visualisation off, like name or overall nodes. the second panel on the left is labelled vote summary with a set of statistics, result: passed, total votes 42, for 29, against 5, abstain 8, absent 19, vacant 10. on the right is a side panel that can collapse to the left with details of a selected councillor, the SU president. there is dummy information about their name, (steven universe), pronouns, degree year and picture. buttons for contact and socials, followed by two collapsables, manifesto and voting history which shows a scrollable table of all the president's votes.

A great exampple of why #aria labels may not always bee what you want. I see so many articles/pages/what have you on the web right now that still say "Share on Twitter". Visually it's just the X logo now, but the aria label never got updated. You should probably not be sharing anything into that cesspool anymore at this point, but I'l take the easy example of why invisible labeling = not great at times :) #accessibility
