Ed Summers<p>I've had the opportunity to hear Mark Graham speak on several occasions, and he is always such a good spokesperson for <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://mastodon.archive.org/@internetarchive" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>internetarchive</span></a></span> . But he really was in top form in this 2 part interview with Amy Goodman of Democracy Now. He speaks on a wide variety of topics of interest to <a href="https://social.coop/tags/webarchiving" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>webarchiving</span></a> and <a href="https://social.coop/tags/archives" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>archives</span></a> more generally, in a very circumscribed and personal way.</p><p>1. <a href="https://www.democracynow.org/2025/2/28/internet_archive_trump_admin_data_purge" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">democracynow.org/2025/2/28/int</span><span class="invisible">ernet_archive_trump_admin_data_purge</span></a><br>2. <a href="https://www.democracynow.org/2025/2/28/extended_interview_mark_graham_on_internet" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">democracynow.org/2025/2/28/ext</span><span class="invisible">ended_interview_mark_graham_on_internet</span></a></p>

Spent some time looking for a simple solution to save web pages from (for example) PalmDB, because there is no guarantee what this resource will be available in the future.

Wget — cool, but stores a lot of small files on my HDD.

Then I tried WARC — a WaybackMachine format. Also cool, but seems not to have been designed for standalone use. There are no standalone viewer or simple Firefox plugins "Save to WARC" and "Open WARC file"🤷‍♂️

Love this! A 22-page DIY web archiving zine that "shows you why everyone should participate in preserving the things on the web they care about, and how anyone can do so (no special expertise required!)".

Continued thread

digital is more-or-less ephemeral, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't make our best effort at #DigitalPreservation. i'm interested in and regularly engage in #WebArchiving, so that today's scholarship can continue to be studied & built upon by tomorrow's students.

it's an honor and a pleasure to work with the students of today and tomorrow. they deserve their #Privacy and to not have their personal data sold out from under them. they also deserve to inherit a world better than the one they were born into, which is why #ClimateJustice is one of the most important issues of our time. there are any number of ways we can contribute to that personally and professionally and i appreciate the opportunity to learn and engage further on the subject. 2/2

Having come over as part of the #TwitterMigration, #Mastodon is a new frontier for me. I appreciate any tips/tricks long term users can offer.
