#BikeNite A1: Posting from rainy #WaterlooRegion, #Ontario. It is not biking weather, and will remain so for almost a week...

I have a hybrid bike (commuter/groomed trails), and the only carrying capacity is a couple of panniers and whatever I can hold down with a couple of bungie cords. Good enough for a small grocery run, but I'm more likely to take a car once than the bike for three trips.

Nothing a nice cargo bike wouldn't fix...

☝️yay! I have floated this balloon a few times, and finally got traction.
We've got a bonafide Signal group for anybody in the vaguely Guelph-ish area!

This is region-specific not mastondon-specific, btw. So if you know anyone not on fedi that would still be interested, DM me for a link to share. Open to anyone interested in building local community and connections - very #spoonie friendly, btw.

#BikeNite A1: Posting from the north of #WaterlooRegion. A warm spell of 20C earlier this week finally melted the last of the snow in our yard, although our neighbour still has a small heap in a shaded corner.

Spring makes me itchy to get biking. But it's some doing to get it out of the basement, and it's back to freezing temperatures anyway.

*And* I seem to have put my back out lifting something last week. Just muscular, I think, and the heat pack makes it feel better.

Every once in a while the politicians for #WaterlooRegion make the right decisions. But that's diminished by hedging their bets (f'rinstance: Approve the LRT, but then delay bringing it to Cambridge by years, soon to be a decade).

And it's not helped by a right-wing shift in the election of muncipal politicians, who aren't going to make bold, progressive decisions in the first place.

As Annie and Aretha sang, Sisters Are Doin' It For Themselves. While men get most of the attention and almost all the investment funds, women are doing the work, founding, running and growing food production companies.

We’ve a few local female-founded companies who are stocking shop shelves across the province and country, and supplying restaurants. So, For International Women's Day, I chatted with a couple of them about their journeys:

Becky from Beck's Broth

There is SO MUCH #CanCon music being made, and SO MUCH #KWCon music made in just #WaterlooRegion. The CRTC requirement of 35% doesn't begin to scratch the surface.

Join your local #CommunityRadio station, and you can sample the firehose of new music submitted. At @radiowaterloo.ca we get several hundred submissions a week from all over the world. But the CanCon portion of that is enough that we wouldn't have to play anything else.

My latest food column is up!

Whether they're nurturing a new generation of farmers, continuing a legacy, creating new flavours or making it easier to find tastes of home, Waterloo-Wellington's Black food entrepreneurs are helping to shape our food scene and add to the nation conversation.

I'm in #WaterlooRegion, as usual. The snow is melting, and the roads are finally getting clear enough for biking. Soon. Real soon.

I like the stickers, particularly the hand-drawn hashtag "Bikenite" ones. I'd probably put them on my laptop lid rather than my bike. But maybe it's time to decorate my bike with stickers too.

Definitely need to be die-cut vinyl stickers, 'cos the paper ones (even coated paper) don't last in the weather.

Day 23 of 30 Days of Local Food: ForeQuarter Butcher Shop

When the price of meat began rising, I shifted most of my meat budget to local independent butchers who focus on locally sourced products. If I'm paying more, I figure I should support those who treat and feed their animals and birds well. Happy animals produced happy meat, as I say. I bounce around – we’re lucky to have choice – but over the past six, eight months, I’ve pretty much found myself returning time and time again to ForeQuarter. The meats are sourced from local/nearby farmers, committed to ethical and sustainable practices. The quality and flavour are so much better than what’s in those plastic-wrapped trays that sit under fluorescent lights. Plus, the folks there are just lovely.

“‘If you really like the Green movement, send me a message, tell me I'm doing great, tell me I can earn your vote for next time, but this time, vote Catherine Fife, vote NDP.’ Esmail is running for the Green party for a second time. Fife has been MPP for the riding since 2012 when she won a byelection.”
