hey to new ppl finding this account 🤗🌀 just wanted to share a sweet moment i had this week teaching a musician friend some strudel stuff!

he picked it up crazyyy fast – i feel like the most efficient way to teach someone with a background in music is to ask them what sound they want to get out of the software and then show (or figure out) how to do that with code

Quick hack making a module dependency graph for #TidalCycles Haskell implementation, gonna start at the bottom to try to understand how it works.

```
github.com/tidalcycles/Tidal/src/Sound/Tidal$ (echo "digraph G {"; git grep ^import.*Tidal | sed "s|qualified||g" | sed "s|^\([^-]*\).hs:import *Sound.Tidal.\([A-Za-z0-9_.]*\).*$|\1 -> \2;|g" | tr "/." "__" ; echo "}" ) | tred | dot -Tpng > modules.png
G'day my name is Bernie.
I'm an Australian Livecoder trying to navigate a global scene from a fairly remote location.
I'm active predominantly within the #tidalcycles #estuary and #toplap #livecoding communities, hosting open collaborative livecoded jam sessions ( #weekendjam s) every week since Dec 2020 with @savamala (and others).
Despite my relative remoteness, I've run workshops and played varying sized gigs (remotely and irl) over the years:
infrequency.au/
ozchi.org/2022/creative_7.html
I am a huge proponent of free software, shared ideas and increasing accessibility to cool stuff.
Here's a series of free workshops I wrote for Tidal, Punctual and Estuary from 2022:
First mastodon post! I thought a brief introduction to what I will usually post about is in order:
Every week (for about the last two years) I hang out with a bunch of (regularly changing) livecoding artists from all around the world and we improvise some music/audio and visuals in a collaborative web-based livecoding environment called "Estuary".
Anyone is welcome to join! Hit me up if you're interested - no previous experience necessary👋
Then I (usually) post a highlight and a link to the jam:
This one is from last week, where it was myself and joanq jamming
With all the new folks and follows it’s time for another #introduction ! Boosts appreciated, I'd love to meet all the new people!
I believe #blacklivesmatter and #translivesmatter , science is real, love is love, etc etc. I post about #synthesizers , #mentalhealth - esp #bipolar disorder.
I'm a #neurodivergent techie person. I have #synesthesia and see sound; all my senses are visual (I taste and smell in color, etc). Also my concept of time is in 3D, and all inanimate objects (including letters and shapes) have gender - which is on a spectrum (not binary). more about all that here: https://planet.chrisbeckstrom.com/synesthesia/
Here’s a tutorial I wrote about using #mastodon : https://chrisbeckstrom.com/tutorials/get_started_with_mastodon/
I build analog and digital #synthesizers for fun, and you can too! I have a tutorial here: https://chrisbeckstrom.com/2019/11/15/getting-started-in-synth-diy-first-steps/
I like to make #techno and beats, especially #modbap, and love #dub and #hiphop . I also love #sounddesign and have a ton of free samples here: https://chrisbeckstrom.com/samples/ , including 1,001 samples from my homemade modular synth. I used to be a gigging jazz player in Chicago but I mostly do electronic stuff now, in Michigan.
I am interested in #algorithmic art, especially algorithmic music; I’ve been using #tidalcycles for years and it’s amazing. My favorite software includes #puredata , #vcvrack , #koala , #drambo , #reaper , and #sunvox .
I have a lot of music on bandcamp, most free or pay what you want: https://chrisbeckstrom.bandcamp.com
I work in healthcare technology wrangling patient data. I #homebrew #beer and #kombucha and am into #nature , #hiking , and #foraging . I like to use foraged ingredients in my brewing, especially mugwort, sassafras, and wild black raspberries.
Here's my guide to making really good kombucha: https://chrisbeckstrom.com/tutorials/making_kombucha/ - and also kombucha leather! https://chrisbeckstrom.com/tutorials/making_kombucha_leather/
As a white cis dude I try to acknowledge my immense privilege and use to help others without that. Sometimes that means in person with marches and protests, sometimes that means doing what I can from my computer, depending on my spoons.
I'm not a fan of #capitalism , #nazis , #terfs , etc. I'm a friendly #atheist and sometimes do atheist activism: here's me at the capitol doing a #flyingspaghettimonster display: https://www.lansingstatejournal.com/story/news/local/capitol/2015/12/18/flying-spaghetti-monster-comes-capitol/77564922/
