02/09/2025 at BBSP. This Broadbanded Water Snake was struggling,but hadn't captured prey. Its teeth were caught on a plant stalk! It changed grip & pulled free! The tip of its bottom jaw shows at the bottom left of the stalk. The snake is orange and brown-with the orange as the base color, and brown blotches covering top of head and neck. The snake's upper lip is above the stalk, and the lighter orange scales have a brown line on the front borders. Although somewhat shaded, we can see the snake's eye, with a round black pupil. The snake is a Broadbanded Water Snake (Nerodia fasciata), and it had somehow grabbed the plant stalk. It had been pulling on the stalk for a while.

Image 3 of 4 Very VERY close view of the skull of a mostly cleaned snake carcass. This was taken in 2024. The carcass was mostly cleaned of flesh, but twisted into a loose mass. It may have been regurgitated. I found it on the trail. The skull is pointing to our right, and is lying on ground covered by loose dirt and large pebbles. The skull is angled so we can see the roof of the mouth, partially obscured by a large piece of skin that is mostlu pale, with dark red blotches. The skull shows at least 2 rows of very sharp, thin, teeth which hook backwards, towards the throat. Because of the red markings, I think the snake was a Broadbanded Water Snake (Nerodia fasciata).

The snake's upper lip is above the stalk, and the lighter orange scales have a brown line on the front borders. Although somewhat shaded, we can see the snake's eye, with a round black pupil. The snake is a Broadbanded Water Snake (Nerodia fasciata), and it had somehow grabbed the plant stalk. After a few more minutes, it successfully pulled itself free.

The snake is a Broadbanded Water Snake (Nerodia fasciata), that was on the Spillway Trail in 2017.

Spring fever. After a relatively rough winter, things are warming up and the forest is humming with tree frogs, wood frogs, and spring peeps. Ramps (Allium tricoccum) are starting to emerge in our ramp beds. And we've set up a bee hive.
