And finally, new data from Nameberry says people in red states are giving their kids the classic Jewish name Cohen (sometimes with the spelling Kohen). Our @CultureDesk featured this Forward story by Benyamin Cohen and Mira Fox, who are trying to figure out why. Theories include that people are naming their children after the directing duo the Coen brothers, or that it’s a co-opting by Christians of Jewish traditions. Says Benyamin: “I think it’s clever to give pets human names. We have chickens and each one is named after an NPR broadcaster. We have Terry Gross, Yuki Noguchi, Nina Totenberg and so on. We’re actually on our third Melissa Block. The first two, alas, are in chicken heaven now.” Mira replies: “And they all, of course, have your last name.” Benyamin: “Yes, yes. We call them the Co-Hens. I wonder what Nameberry would think of that.”

Christians using Cohen/Kohen as a first name...hmmm....not too sure about that, I must say.

>> ...it feels part of a general trend toward co-opting Jewish traditions and then changing their meaning, or trying to tie it to Jesus.<<

The name Kohen (or Cohen) is skyrocketing in popularity, but only in red states, while Mira is all over blue states. What's driving the popularity of these traditionally Jewish names? Forward's Benyamin Cohen and Mira Fox have thoughts. Mira: "Does Cohen mean anything else, besides being a priest?" Benyamin: "Sure, it means, 'Hi, I’m a Jew.'"

A proposal to automatically give babies mother’s last name ignites a row in Italy.

An Italian politician has proposed a law that would make it automatic for babies to be assigned their mother’s last name at birth, a step that would mark a rupture with tradition and has sparked a fiery debate.

Children born in Italy are automatically registered with their father’s last name, unless the father is absent from the child’s life.

Smooth!

Don't think I'd heard of Ivory Joe Hunter, thanks!

Just looked him up: Rhythm and blues singer/songwriter (and, inevitably, pianist) ... lived 1914-1974 ... The Baron of Boogie ... wrote over 7,000 songs.

Maybe most memorable factoid: "Ivory Joe" was his real name; at birth, his parents said he "looked just like the baby on the outside of the Castoria Ivory bottle." (Apparently a children's laxative?)

Want american Democrats to ACTUALLY DO something already?

Consider Direct Action instead!
But as well as that, we *do* need a non-corrupt (yet! there's always time, ofc) replacement party that is ACTUALLY left-wing.

Tea Party and MAGA supporters did it. Don't follow their strategies completely, but DO LEARN FROM them. We All deserve better, even the Leopards Eating People's Faces party.

How many of them would have supported having their faces eaten if they KNEW it wasn't hyperbole or something?
Or if they took time to imagine and plan for the risks: their or loved ones' faces being eaten by leopards?
