On my way to #Leiden for a #MatthewPassion, then after that straight to #Amersfoort for a soloist job in #Rossini 's #PetiteMesseSolennelle. The conductor couldn't get over how vulgar that latter one is... Which is true. But it's also just really nice music, to sing and to listen to.

My #Brompton is decked out for the journey—food and clothing and sheet music in the front basket, my suit on the back. The suitcase is a really nifty design by #Lat_56. On some days I can get away with just the suitcase, but not today.

Sebastiaan (Bas) Ammerlaan — bariton · Recording Brahms - Ein deutsches Requiem - Sebastiaan (Bas) Ammerlaan — baritonOne of the last concerts I could give before the current new Covid-19 lockdown was the famous Ein deutsches Requiem by Johannes Brahms, with fellow soloist Elenora Hu, the <a href=https://www.toonkunst-utrecht.nl>Toonkunstkoor Utrecht</a> conducted by Jos Vermunt and the Utrechtsch Studenten Concert as the symphony orchestra. Coincidentally, I played in this orchestra myself, once, and even was part of the board for a year. A big honor!

The nyckelharpa is a folk instrument from Sweden 🇸🇪 with a long standing tradition there. "Nyckelharpa" is a Swedish word, "nyckel" meaning "key" and "harpa" being a general term for a stringed instrument. Its key features (hah, see what I did there?) are the sympathetic strings and a keybox full of wooden keys. Some translate it into English to "keyed fiddle" 🗝️ 🎻 "viola de teclas" in Spanish or "viola d'amore a chiavi" in Italian - although it is not a fiddle or viola ;)

How it works: I produce the sound with a bow on the strings, like on any other bowed instrument, but instead of touching the strings with the fingers of my left hand and pushing them down on a fretboard or fingerboard to play a melody, I press a key. The key moves a little wooden tangent to the string and tada, the note changes 🎉 The magical sound of the nyckelharpa is created from its sympathetic strings (usually 12) which are enhancing every note I play on the four melody strings.

I have multiple instrumental progressive synth tracks that need to get out. Some melodies are still taking shape, some are already done. The feeling, soundscapes, and vision are already clear.

I think this belongs to the less popular songs from their catalogue, but it's an amazing song, an epic ending for an amazing album!

Fairly simple in terms of drumming, fairly tricky to keep the playing consistent through the whole length.
This actually showed me how hard it is to keep the focus for as little as 10 minutes. We're doomed 🙃
