Just added another 5.25" floppy disk release from CSmeds99's recent Internet Archive uploads to my personal retro collection: "Microsoft Office 4.3 Professional". This version from 1994 came on 37 x 1.2MB HD diskettes, which really is A LOT! It just took me about an hour to verify them. I guess at that point in time, I remember why everyone just went for CD-ROMs! Holy cow! 😃

How come most people (governments?) don't use Softmaker's FreeOffice? It's also available on Linux, and it's a German company...

Edit: Yes, I know it's not open source, duh. But for a government or company that wants to switch to a non-MS office, that wouldn't be a huge consideration, believe it or not. Remember, EU is trying to move away from MS, foss or not. So this should be a strong contender, being a German product, even if not foss.

#globalization could only happen with the spread of #MSOffice. USA produced software have been describe at different points as crack-cocaine. i think of it more as viruses ―not just as software, but cognitive.

so if you want to destroy Silicon Valley, you need to break the gringo engineering mold that depends on monolingual architectures and infrastructures. this isn’t just relational databases. KEYBOARD HARDWARE is a big one.

#multilinguism is to gringos what #vaccines are to viruses.

@timnitGebru Boycott, divest, sanction Microsoft → bdsmovement.net/microsoft

"The Palestinian-led BDS movement, supported by Microsoft workers, calls on people of conscious to pressure Microsoft to end its complicity in Israeli apartheid and AI-powered genocide. To pressure Microsoft, boycott Microsoft’s consumer products whenever possible"

BDS MovementMicrosoftMicrosoft is perhaps the most complicit tech company in Israel’s illegal apartheid regime and ongoing genocide against 2.3 million Palestinians in Gaza.

These are all the relevant, native office apps for Linux. I installed them all to test and show them here. Some of them aren't maintained anymore (e.g. a few Calligra apps, Glom etc), but most are still applicable. If you're considering a move to Linux, you should be able to find what you're looking for among them, and among the various online web offerings.

Which office suite(s) do you use at least once a week? (in a typical week)

Please only answer the poll *if* you use #office software, such as #wordprocessor, #spreadsheet #presentation software, etc.

Today at work we were forced to upgrade to Office 365. Wow, what a mess. So many things to hate.

For example, the search bar in Outlook. It is awkwardly positioned in the blue title bar, off-center. It is surrounded by extraneous icons/junk, only some of which can be dismissed to declutter.

The search bar itself looks okay initially. But when you click it and begin typing, multiple design crimes are committed simultaneously.

@mattis

Saving #LibreOffice documents in #MSOffice formats work very well for most applications. Haven't seen much loss in transition except for more complex embedded formatting and formulas. I use #Writer for all my docs and #Calc for spreadsheets.

For feedback, of course comments work same as in Office and for real-time editing usually upload to Google Drive and shared with editing capability.

Have never used #Zotero.
