Think Trump's immigration policy is bad?
Of course it's bad! But it's not anything new, either. Even the scale of what he proposes has been done before in the U.S. For example:

Today in Labor History February 2, 1931: U.S. citizens of Mexican heritage were “repatriated” to Mexico. During the decade’s first four years, the federal government deported anywhere from several hundred thousand to 1.8 million Mexicans. 40-60% of those deported were U.S. citizens and overwhelmingly children. President Hoover blamed Mexicans for the Great Depression and deported them in huge numbers to win support from his right-wing base.

Sound familiar?

The U.S. (and many other countries) has a long, sordid history of nativism, racism and scapegoating of immigrants to achieve political ends.

Go back to the mid-1800s and you'll see numerous examples of politicians and the press provoking nativist riots against "Papists" (Irish Catholics who had fled the famine of the 1840s). Some of those Irish immigrants were drafted by the U.S. to fight its war of expansion against Mexico and switched sides, becoming the Saint Patrick's Brigade (los San Patricios).

New York's Bowery Boys, and Baltimore's Plug Uglies, were 2 examples of nativist gangs of the era. They participated in the the Know-Nothing Riot in Washington, D.C. in 1857, where the National Guard shot and killed ten citizens. They also participated in the 1863 New York City draft riots in which up to 120 people died.

@jon I have a good tale or two to tell about the 3rd party that once romanced big box retailers with their interface to the great wild jungle that is online shopping.

A "partnership" of sorts. Known as a vacuum cleaner by most home owners.

#Hoover it all up!

Bye-bye.

November 18, 1964 - FBI director J. Edgar Hoover publicly characterized Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr. as "the most notorious liar in the country." King replied that Hoover "has apparently faltered under the awesome burden, complexities, and responsibilities of his office."

@tomiahonen

Being from #Iowa I take exception to this comparison (pos or neg).

IMO, we would be much better off if we had #Hoover as president from 2016-2020.

He had many flaws, as we all do, and did not rise to the challenges of his time as president. But the World also remembers him as a #hero after #WWI.

"Hoover worked 14-hour days from London, administering the distribution of over two million tons of food to nine million war victims. In an early form of shuttle diplomacy, he crossed the North Sea forty times to meet with German authorities and persuade them to allow food shipments.... At the request of the French government, they began delivering supplies to the people of German-occupied Northern France in 1915. American diplomat Walter Page described Hoover as 'probably the only man living who has privately (i.e., without holding office) negotiated understandings with the British, French, German, Dutch, and Belgian governments.'"

'Russell told the dispatcher that she was near mile marker 11 when she saw a toddler walking alone on the side of I-459.

After calling 911, Russell stopped to check on the child and called a family member. The family member lost contact with her, but the line remained open.'
