Douglas<p>Hello from the top of <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/NelsonMountain" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>NelsonMountain</span></a> in the <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/SierraNationalForest" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>SierraNationalForest</span></a> about ten air miles from <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/DinkeyCreek" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>DinkeyCreek</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/California" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>California</span></a> (to the south). Somehow even though I'm in the middle of nowhere very far from any cell site, I've got good 5G coverage at the top of this mountain.</p><p>Now if I knew how to do <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/SOTA" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>SOTA</span></a> I could broadcast from here because I do have my talkie walkie with me. Next time... </p><p>Our <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/GMRS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>GMRS</span></a> radio is hitting Forked Meadow loud and clear ten miles away but it is line of sight.</p>
Tim N7KOM<p>What's everyone's favorite GMRS radios? Marcus "MajorLinux" Summers<p>Joined my first <a href="https://toot.majorshouse.com/tags/GMRS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>GMRS</span></a> net "call" earlier this evening!</p><p>I at least know there are 11 other people who had nothing to do on a Saturday evening other than talk on two-way radios.</p>
Marcus "MajorLinux" Summers<p>HOLY SHIT!</p><p>After nearly a week of trying to get ahold of someone on a <a href="https://toot.majorshouse.com/tags/GMRS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>GMRS</span></a> repeater, I finally made contact with someone!</p><p>This is an absolute game changer!</p>
Profoundly Nerdy<p>Can someone recommend an FRS radio that doesn't suck? I have a pair of Midland FRS radios with 10 minute battery lives and dodgy PTT buttons. </p><p>I need:</p><p>* As much battery life as possible. <br>* A PTT button that a child (or a boomer) can work reliably. <br>* USB-C charging would be a nice bonus.</p><p><a href="https://bitbang.social/tags/frs" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>frs</span></a> <a href="https://bitbang.social/tags/gmrs" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>gmrs</span></a> <a href="https://bitbang.social/tags/hamradio" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>hamradio</span></a></p>

Steve<p>It's no secret at work that I'm a <a href="https://mastodon.cloud/tags/HamRadio" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>HamRadio</span></a> operator. Knowing that, one of my colleagues just informed me he got his <a href="https://mastodon.cloud/tags/GMRS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>GMRS</span></a> license. Not quite the same, I know, but given he was in the path of Helene, I'm happy he did it for his family's future safety.</p>

Is there a good API for monitoring telco outages?

For context, have a specific use case in mind: outage above a certain size and duration alerts area #GMRS and #hamradio operators. Dual licensed operators then take traffic from #FRS callers, who could be anybody. Normal ham radio self organization kicks in from there: local repeaters, #APRS, #Winlink, #NTS, #RRI, whatever.

All the public needs to know is "grab an FRS radio and call on X frequency." like REACT back in the day.

On the off-chance that anyone here uses the GMRSLive network, I have created a parrot node for testing audio on node 2156. This is basically a copy of the parrot I wrote for Allstarlink node 55553 (for hams).
This node not only plays back your audio, but also annalises the average RMS level, and tells you if it's too high, too low, just about right, etc.
I'm not on Facebook, where a lot of the GMRSLive people are, so not sure the best way to get this info out there.
