ARRL Operating Manual: A good rule of thumb to follow is "always erect as much antenna as possible."

Still looking for a way to use my Yaesu FT-65 in the event of a prolonged power outage like a Cascadia Subduction Zone earthquake. People on local nets seem confident that I could find either a AAA battery pack or a 12V cigarette lighter charger, but my searches are coming up empty.
The closest I've found is https://forum.expeditionportal.com/threads/need-ham-radio-for-upcoming-rof-trip-need-ideas.215959/page-2, with comments saying to modify the adapter, which makes me nervous.
It seems bizarre that there's no off-the-shelf solution.
Slightly surprised that the default ham radio facial hair style isn't "single sideburn".
This is interesting. In Sweden, CB radio is obviously clear for all to read, but it's illegal to talk about a transmission with others if it was not intended for you. Is it like that in the US too?
Thanks to everyone who has helped me get started with amateur radio. #ham #AmateurRadio #iykyk
For all you HAM's out there...
Today is Morse Code Day
What Is Morse Code Day?
Morse Code Day, observed on April 27, honors Samuel Morse, the inventor of Morse code, and celebrates this groundbreaking method of communication. #MorseCode #HAM #AmatuerRadio

Searching for a headset for my Yaesu FT-65 and ran across one that claims to be "Ideal for Church / Temple Security".
I ordered a bundle of ten 4.433619MHz xtals (for 1.2€).
Can you guess what they will be used for?
Tip 1: it is related to #amateurRadio
Tip 2: it is related to an old very popular "thing" a lot of #ham (at least in Europe) owned in the 90's
Voll toll. Eine ganze Gruppe von Funkamateur*innen, in der ich auch bin, hat sich entschieden, von #WhatsApp nach #Signal umzuziehen. Ach würde das nur Schule machen. #ham #amateurfunk #Datenschutz
Ham connect meeting open to the public tomorrow in Seattle, 4/12, ACS mtg: 9a-1030,
Ham Connect mtg 10:30 am to?
Next meeting will be hosted by Seattle ACS at the north Seattle College, and can also be attended via zoom link.
Ham radio nerds at my work posted about it.
Details can be found at https://www.hamconnect.org
Just got myself an inexpensive HAM for the car when mobile, an Anytone AT-778UVII, and I just figured out how to program it over CHIRP! Now to program all the stations in that I use on my HT #AmateurRadio #HAM
Baofengs, TID Radio, and other budget HAM radios may not be perfect, but they get people started. Yes, some have issues like spurious emissions, but not everyone can drop big money day one. Educate, don’t gatekeep—be kind, we all started somewhere in radio and other tech. #AmateurRadio #HAM #radio
I stumbled across a Linux net and began to wonder if ham radio is just the audiobook of Mastodon.
Question: my NET (Portland for "CERT") team uses FRS radios for communication. Now that I'm a ham, can I simply use my Yaesu FT-65 to communicate on the same frequency but with better range?
The existence of this frequency table suggests yes:

Mildly interesting: most physical devices that have handedness assume you'll be using them with your right hand. Handheld radios and walkie-talkies assume the opposite.
Someone said that #pota #ParksOnTheAir activations on 160m won’t work. Someone said that no one does that. I guess they were wrong. :)
This was a couple of weeks ago with @DK4HAA @dc1tc an other operator and one trainee. We’ve had a full length dipole approx 7m up in the trees. Loads of p2p since other #draussenfunker were also activating.
The manual for my Yaesu FT-65 says, "Avoid recharging Li-Ion batteries before the <low battery> indicator is observed, as this can degrade the charge capacity of your Li-Ion battery pack."
This seems in conflict with keeping the radio charged for emergencies (specifically the Cascadia Subduction Zone Earthquake).
Thoughts?
Three new ham questions:
1) ARRL: Worth it?
2) If I got one introductory/reference book beyond the technician manual, what would you recommend?
3) Where do I find a list of local nets? I found a lot listed at https://www.arrl.org/arrl-net-directory-search, but surprisingly not the one I stumbled across!
