Bud Talbot<p>I think it is time to consider rebooting the <a href="https://m.ai6yr.org/tags/FediFridayWinlinkNet" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>FediFridayWinlinkNet</span></a> but I need your ideas and input. Bud Talbot<p>I recently acquired a used Kenwood TH-D75A. <a href="https://m.ai6yr.org/tags/APRS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>APRS</span></a> reception and decode on this radio is way, way better than on my Yaesu FT-5DR. I expected this based on my past comparisons between Yaesu and Kenwood APRS capable radios. The difference is night and day. </p><p>I really do believe that the Kenwood APRS HTs have always been the best in terms of performance and features. And they have real, externally accessible TNCs, which is great for packet and <a href="https://m.ai6yr.org/tags/Winlink" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Winlink</span></a>! </p><p>The Kenwood radios really are nice, but $$$</p><p><a href="https://m.ai6yr.org/tags/hamradio" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>hamradio</span></a></p>

Profoundly Nerdy<p>Is there a good API for monitoring telco outages? </p><p>For context, have a specific use case in mind: outage above a certain size and duration alerts area <a href="https://bitbang.social/tags/GMRS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>GMRS</span></a> and <a href="https://bitbang.social/tags/hamradio" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>hamradio</span></a> operators. Dual licensed operators then take traffic from <a href="https://bitbang.social/tags/FRS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>FRS</span></a> callers, who could be anybody. Normal ham radio self organization kicks in from there: local repeaters, <a href="https://bitbang.social/tags/APRS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>APRS</span></a>, <a href="https://bitbang.social/tags/Winlink" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Winlink</span></a>, <a href="https://bitbang.social/tags/NTS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>NTS</span></a>, <a href="https://bitbang.social/tags/RRI" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>RRI</span></a>, whatever.</p><p>All the public needs to know is "grab an FRS radio and call on X frequency." like REACT back in the day.</p><p><a href="https://bitbang.social/tags/prepping" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>prepping</span></a></p>
AI6YR Ben<p>Funny traffic on the ham radio here. The local hams are reporting any damage/felt reports to the USGS via Winlink (RF)--alternate in case the Internet is out--and one of the form fields is "event id".
