I'm grateful for my first contact with the #GNU #Linux world in 1998, in the college #computer lab... despite the #WindowMaker #WindowManager hehehe
The previous year we used the #lab of another #college in the same #university running #Microsoft #WindowsNT 3.51
In 1999 I tried using Linux on my personal computer, and since 2001 I definitively used the #Brazilian #distro #Conectiva (now defunct)
when i said i was daily driving wayback, i wasn't kidding...

Giving #OpenBSD 7.7 a dump test to achieve on the Quieter 4C, the Intel N100 using 14W according to the plug. No bad at all, given that the 4K video runs in Firefox.

P.S., #WindowMaker was elite. I have many fond memories of it from 25 years ago. I occasionally run their live CD in a vm for fun and nostalgia.

Kinda frustrated with the state of #desktops in #Linux / #BSD / #Unix
You can either have a fully functional, but kind of frustrating-to-use (too mouse-centric) desktop with Gnome or KDE Plasma, or you can have a lean, efficient, and fast wm/compositor like #i3, #sway #awesomewm #evilwm, #cwm, #bspwm, or whatever you like, BUT you will constantly be scratching your head when #Gnome and #GTK programs either start very slowly or refuse to run at all, and are constantly trying to figure out what combination of configuration, daemon, and small animal sacrifices are necessary to do what the big, bloated desktops do automatically.
It's freaking exhausting, and I want to go back to the days that every one just ran #IceWM, #Enlightenment, or #WindowMaker.
P.S., Just for clarity, I really do love #KDE #Plasma. I think it's a wonderful, easy-to-use, and extremely flexible desktop. But sometimes I really don't want a desktop, I just want a lean-and-basic UI that stays out of my way (for home stuff vs. work stuff, generally).
I've been playing with the #WindowMaker version of #Debian recently, just to remember the old, good #NextSTEP, #OpenSTEP era. I used to have a #NeXTStation but I sold it locally for $300 just before I left US for Greece. It could probably fetch thousands on eBay, but I didn't want to deal with shipping such a heavy item.
Ah, I miss the old #SiliconValley. Back when there was actually room to innovate in ways that were revolutionary, and not just additive.
