#UniversityOfToronto hires three prominent Yale #professors worried about Trump

#Fascism scholar #JasonStanley and #historians #TimothySnyder and #MarciShore have taken jobs at the University of Toronto amid concerns about the second #Trump administration

by Allison Smith, Mar 26, 2025

"U.S. President Donald Trump’s reelection has spurred several high-profile Yale #professors to leave New Haven for jobs at the University of Toronto.

"Bestselling author Timothy Snyder and historian Marci Shore are on leave from Yale and joined UofT earlier this year.

"Snyder and Shore, who are married, will begin teaching courses at the Munk School of Global Affairs & Public Policy this fall.

"Shore told TorontoToday they plan to stay at UofT 'for the long-term.'

"Snyder is the New York Times bestselling author of #OnTyranny and The Road to #Unfreedom, and an outspoken critic of the #Trump administration.

"UofT began recruiting her and Snyder two years ago, Shore said, 'and we were seriously considering the offers long before the November 2024 presidential elections.'

"'Both Toronto and the Munk School were and are very attractive places unto themselves, even bracketing the American descent into fascism,' she said in an email.

"'All that said, yes, of course our #AmericanCatastrophe played a role in our final decision.'"

as astute colleagues of mine point out: it's weird how #UofT has the money to hire white American "star" professors exiting because of Trump2 while it simultaneously has zero money to hire Palestinian, Black, and racialized women scholars who languish in contract teaching positions, their free speech suppressed by the Administration, fearful of losing their precarious jobs 💩

UN Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Opinion and Expression, Irene Khan:

“Israel is a State. Zionism is a political ideology. Under international human rights law on freedom of expression, no State or political ideology can be shielded from criticism.”

Someone should tell the #UofT administration #CivilDiscourseNonsense

Finally had a chance to visit #UofT’s new #geothermal plant. It’s the largest in Canada. Hundreds of pipes running 250m into the ground providing year round heating and cooling to 30 campus buildings. And you can peak in and see (a little bit of) it under Kings College circle

Another day, another official-looking email from the university that's indistinguishable from a phishing scam. This one is about our new pension plan, but:
- the hotlinks are fake, taking you to a different domain than described
- these then take you to another website at another suspicious-looking domain
- it then asks you to enter personal information to register
- the email assures us the portal is secure

#UofT please do better

Every weirdo who wants their 15 minutes is here.

Every fucking conspiracy theorist.
Every antisemite.
Every person with a grudge is here, and I cannot run interference on every outlet hoping to paint the encampment as antisemitic — despite the judge's actual ruling — and it's not even my job.

So bear that in mind when you watch the news tonight.

@Gigi Your protest is deemed not violent, not anti-Semitic, and informative because of the multifaith sit-ins.

Yet there is "harm" done because you're taking up space on a campus that your fellow protestors attend regularly? And that "harm" is greater than the harm that will come when police come to arrest the protestors?

The hypocrisy here is astounding. If you are only allowed to protest when and where the university wants, then you are not allowed protest.
