Perry County Courthouse Autumn Scene

A historic brick building stands prominently, featuring a clock tower and surrounded by vibrant autumn trees. Cars are parked along the road, and a cloudy sky looms overhead.

Come December, I expect a bump in #Mastodon inscriptions as more people flee #LeonSkum's disaster of a #Fascist "#TownSquare"

The #ElongatedMuskrat, earlier today, Sept 27, 2024:

«In order to be a platform that fully embraces #FreeSpeech, the #block and #mute features will be removed from #X this December as they are a hindrance to the #1stAmendment»

The excitement of the #e4769 petition got me thinking about metaphors for the #Fediverse. Particularly the "town square" model we know from other places. I've landed on this that immediately pleased me.

The Fediverse is a City.
Every home, apartment, business, government office, can see and hear the town square if they choose. Everyone can open their window and hear what is being said.

They can also speak into it — in their own ways — and be heard by people in the square and in other buildings.

They can also close the window (or have their window boarded up) and only talk inside their own building, or only to their colleagues, or their friends.

@nedhamson

Here's my take, Ned
Twitter was the world's " #TownSquare ". Whenever something happened, it took literally seconds for the rest of the world to know about it. In many instances, Twitter was disseminating information before most major news organizations did. Skirmish in Afghanistan? Check #Twitter. An assassination attempt? Get all the info on Twitter. A #coup? Live on Twitter. Planning a Revolution? Yes, the #birdsite. How do you stop people from acquiring info? Burn it all down!!

@FuckElon

$8/month x 12 months/year =
$96/year.

96 bucks a year for a crappy Right-wing, so-called "virtual town Square" that tries to shut you up every time you say something that's not so right-wing?

Wow.

Instead, I urge everyone to send your #Mastodon instance admin $50 (more, if you can afford to do so) every year, on the anniversary of your first day here, to help with costs.

Because THIS is the new and better, ad-free) #TownSquare (and with a lot less #Nazis, to boot)

If you are a #MastoAdmin or #MastoMod and are looking for a place to interact with fellow admins/mods outside of Mastodon, for things such as discussing ideas or support, @jcrabapple has kindly setup a MatterMost server for all of us and we'd love to have you join us there!

You can reach out to myself via DM and let me know what instance(s) you admin/mod, and I can get you an invite link!

“A town square, by definition, can’t be a business. It needs to be a space owned by the people. That’s what an Elon Musk Twitter can never be, and what Mastodon already is.”

An excellent article by @jhpot (in Wired, the Silicon Valley venture capitalist hero worship and surveillance capitalism public relations rag, of all places).
