@MatthewChat ICE now says it's a crime to request ID from their agents.
No problem, they can be identified at the morgue.
#JustWatched Civil War (2024) from A24.
Firstly, A24 have grown up. A lot.
Secondly, a very confronting movie; or, it should be, given the trajectory the US seems to be on at the moment.
There's no real telling who the good guys or bad guys in the war are, other than the President has changed things up enough to sit for a third term.
Hmmm ... I wonder where that idea came from ...
Looking at the combatants, however, there are no discernable differences. The real baddies are the ordinary people letting their inner Lord of the Flies out.
The main actors, all playing press folk, are brilliant.
It's a tight, well drafted movie that moves forward well.
And the last shot is ... interesting.
Today in Labor History April 26, 1937: The Nazis and Italian fascists bombed Guernica, a town in the Basque region of Spain, at the request of Spanish fascist leader, Francisco Franco. Later that year, Picasso painted his famous painting, Guernica, in protest of the atrocity. This was during the Spanish Civil War. The Republicans, a coalition of anarchist, socialist and communist partisans, were fighting the Nationalists, led by Franco. They bombed Guernica for two hours, killing between 1,000 and 3,000 civilians, or 20-60% of the population.
#ICE deports three #AmericanCitizen CHILDREN, one who needs life-saving, medication. Can you imagine how these fuckers sleep at night?
When this is all over (if it doesn't end in a #CivilWar blood bath) these #ICEcunts will be hunted down and they WILL pay.

He’s selling this now. This is total “commie” fascist dictator- insanity. Read the Constitution because it’ll never happen without a #civilwar and we will win

@HarriettMB it's Gilead, to the letter.
They want to make sure white "christian" women are basically acquiescing wombs and they want to make women of every other race, culture and background are basically brooding mares for the white men masters of the universe.
They forget we are armed. AND ANGRY. At their peril.
REMINDER: CALL FOR PAPERS
Politics, the State, and American Capitalism in the Civil War Era
Special Issue of the _Journal of the Civil War Era_
The American Civil War Era was transformative for American capitalism. The destruction of slavery proved the occasion for an unprecedented mobilization of economic resources, dramatic changes in the nature and scale of federal taxation, financial experiments that included a wholesale revamping of the banking and monetary systems, struggles over corporate privileges and labor protections, a slew of expressly developmental policies ranging from railroad subsidies to agricultural research and education, and still more. That all this occurred in a time of governmental crisis, breakdown, and reconstruction underscores the connections between the economy and the state.
This special issue seeks original papers that explore the Civil War Era as a defining period in American economic development. We seek to publish original scholarship that will reenergize an ongoing conversation among historians about political economy, capitalism, and governance. Our goal is not only to uncover American state capacity – which has by now been revealed beyond any doubt – but to explore government’s concrete role in shaping the country’s economic trajectory during this formative period. We are particularly interested in studies that examine specific government actions and policies, on the federal, state, and municipal levels, that shaped important economic outcomes by reconfiguring markets in various ways. Contributions may address any aspect of economic statecraft, including finance, monetary management, legal doctrine, infrastructural projects, tariffs and trade policies, mobilization of labor, and acquisition and use of land. They may also look into political alignments, divisions, mobilizations, and conflicts around any of these issues. The proposals need not be limited to the war itself or its consequences. We finally seek to prioritize historical work that positions the US in a comparative light and engages themes and questions from disciplines across the social sciences and humanities.
Deadline for proposals: April 25, 2025.

Appomattox Court House: not actually where the Civil War ended.
That's at the McLean house, behind me as taking this photo. This was in fact the court house, now the visitor center, and of no consequence during the surrender.
Ironically the Civil War started on the same McLean's farm.
I wonder if Civil War II will start and end on McLean property too...
Americans would you be willing to take up arms to defend democracy in your country?

Today in Labor History April 18, 1912: The governor of West Virginia called out the National Guard against striking coal miners. As a result, fifty people were killed. His action marked the beginning of the West Virginia Mine Wars, initiating one of the most violent strikes in the nation's history. Because of their isolation and geography, the West Virginia mine owners were able to dominate the miners more than almost any other employer in the nation. They hired gun thugs from the Baldwin-Felts Detective Agency, who routinely murdered miners and evicted their families from the company towns. On April 18, thousands of miners went on strike in Paint Creek, Cabin Creek and in surrounding counties. Many were armed with hunting rifles to defend themselves against the company thugs. Mother Jones and Socialist Party members came to support the miners.
The struggle that began today in 1912 continued for decades and included the Battle of Matewan and the Battle of Blair Mountain, the largest armed insurrection since the Civil War, and the largest labor uprising in U.S. history. 10,000-15,000 coal miners battled 3,000 cops, private cops and vigilantes, who were backed by the coal bosses. Up to 100 miners died in the fighting, along with 10-30 Baldwin-Felts detectives and three national guards. Nearly 1,000 people were arrested. One million rounds were fired. And the government bombed striking coal miners by air, using homemade bombs and poison gas left over from World War I. This was the second time the government had used planes to bomb its own citizens within the U.S. (the first was against African American during the Tulsa pogrom, earlier that same year).

For #Black #Americans who can’t understand why #Canada and the #EuropeanUnion #StandWithUkraine , go back in #history to before the #CivilWar in the #UnitedStates. #Ukraine is an escaped slave, and #Russia is the slave owner. Get it?
For White #Trump supporters, who will identify with the slave owner in the above analogy, go back further in time to during the #AmericanRevolution. Ukraine is the escaping colony, and #Russia is the colonizing empire. Get it?

Trump staffer threatens criminal charges for ADVOCATING DUE PROCESS for Kilmar Abrego Garcia
If Garcia has been murdered (which is what death camps are used for), than Trump has received a court order he cannot comply with but also cannot admit to the reason he cannot comply. He may have a literal skeleton in his closet, so he threatens protesters, attorneys, and judges with everything from Federal prison to CECOT.
If they follow through on this is is a declaration of active warfare against all dissent and the entire legal profession. This is true whether we fight or not.
It is quite likely the primary intended target of this threat is Judge Boasberg, who is holding Trump in criminal contempt over the exact same case. If Boasberg is black-bagged and sent to CECOT to die like what may have happened to Mr Garcia himself, that is not only a declaration of war on dissent, but a declaration of war on the entire US constitutional form of government. Extrajudicial renditions and murders of judges over a case involving death camps by the executive branch is as bad as it gets.
There has been a "greatest generation" before. Now is the time, now is the hour for another to arise. The Nazis are in front of us and history is calling.
It's nice to dream of unfeasible, palatable or even ideal solutions to extreme problems.
But the cargo train of reality always runs those over.
If the tRump regime keeps ignoring the courts, the United States is headed, inexorably, to a civil war. If they disregard the Law, then only lethal force will stop them.
I don't go anywhere, anymore, without strict need, and am always keenly looking around where I am going to park, and am acutely aware of unmarked vans.
I no longer feel secure or safe around white people whose politics I don't know for sure are opposed to the Turd Reich.
This is NOT gonna end well, for anyone
denying #FEMA funds, just like the abortion ban and attacks on transgender women, are a a forced #secession.
this is what #CivilWar looks like by guys who’ve never had to sign up to join the Army and, instead, use money to kill their opponents. this is what Civil War looks like when waged behind desks by criminals in business suits.
Show up at the protests Saturday, because a #civilwar is closer than you might think. Trump is dismantling this country to a fascist oligarchy. Code red
