I sure am glad that I no longer live in Austin...

"Self-driving Tesla plows into dummy it identified as pedestrian in safety test

Tesla’s self-driving software detected a child-size dummy and still failed to stop. The same type of vehicle injured a real student in 2023."

"Tesla plans to deploy a small fleet of robotaxis in Austin in the coming weeks. But these won’t be the long-promised 'CyberCab' vehicles.

Instead, Tesla will use standard Model Ys running its Full Self-Driving (FSD) software, the same system at the center of mounting safety concerns.

As a rule, auto dealers avoid holding used inventory because used cars generally depreciate rapidly. Michael Minick, a former #Tesla sales representative & one of the people familiar with the sale of formerly leased cars, told Reuters the company wouldn't allow cars to "just sit on lots & lose value."

"I knew that wasn't true," added Minick, who was among thousands of Tesla employees laid off during a restructuring last year.

Others have long had doubts. When #Tesla in 2019 announced it was prohibiting lease purchases because of its #robotaxi plans, Evercore ISI analysts reacted in a research note: "uhmmm, what??" The announcement "is an indication that Tesla believes their ride-hailing network is going to be a viable business in three years," the analysts added. "Put us in the extremely skeptical camp."

#Tesla's story about keeping used cars for #robotaxis fits a long pattern of unfulfilled promises to deploy #SelfDriving vehicles–most recently announced for June in Austin, Texas.

Every year since 2016, #Musk has promised self-driving Teslas would arrive no later than the following year. In 2019, when Tesla first offered leasing for the Model 3, Musk told podcast host Lex Fridman that the ability to add #AutonomousDriving software would make every used Tesla an "appreciating asset."

Lyft said it plans to offer driverless vehicles on its platform "as soon as this summer,” and that it sees human drivers transitioning to other work such as fleet management as autonomous rides become more ubiquitous. japantimes.co.jp/business/2025 #business #tech #lyft #selfdriving #jobs

The Japan Times · Lyft to offer driverless ride-hails ‘as soon as this summer’By Natalie Lung

Tesla dropped LIDAR from their cars and is relying on just camera visuals for their self-driving feature. That’s a big problem. Watch this comparison between a car that incorporates LIDAR vs a Tesla, and see the Tesla slam into the “pedestrian” again & again.

The tests include a tromp l’oeil wall, which is probably silly, but the other tests are valid.
