Next up #VAR4LCR María Belén Díez-Bedmar is speaking on "Exploring task type effects on L2 accuracy profiles: Narrative vs. email writing by B1 Spanish EFL learners". This study is based on the FineDesc Learner Corpus, which is a manually error-tagged controlled corpus of 200 texts written by 100 Spanish EFL learners that allows for many interesting comparisons: web.ujaen.es/investiga/finedes.

"This could now become the gold standard for how covalent drugs are developed from now on," says [Jeffrey] Agar, an associate professor of chemistry and pharmaceutical sciences [at Northeastern University].

The goal is to make the technique free and available to labs small and large, part of what Agar refers to as the "democratization of science."

"We decided not to patent this," he says. "Just take it, use it and make drugs safer."

Phys.org · Free tool streamlines ALS drug discovery with mass-spectrometry based modelBy Cynthia McCormick Hibbert

I really liked this informal community poll and thematic analysis on SLO usage. It does a better job at highlighting the hurdles to adopting them at a Company Who Is Not Google than a lot of "Here's how to do SLOs" pieces that just don't cover it.

If there is ever a "Seeking SLOs" book, this should be the first chapter.

@carlwgeorge @vermaden @samurro @tara personally, I think #RedHat has kinda shot themselves in the foit, because #CentOS was a good #testbed for #developers in that it didn't require registration to acquire and have basically a 99,99% #RHEL distro to test against.

  • With CentoOS8 being prematurely axed, I was tasked by a fmr. employer / customer to find a suitable replacement and whilst RHEL would've costed almost 6 digits and #SUSE half of that, tge choice in the end was #UbuntuLTS because #Canonical charges 1/8th of what Red Hat wants at the same #SLA...

New year calls for a new #introduction – especially as mine's been out-of-date since March 2023... 😬

So, I'm now a #postdoc at the Department of Romance Studies at the University of #Cologne 🇩🇪. I work in the fields of applied #linguistics and foreign language #education. I like all things related to #CorpusLinguistics, #SLA, #LanguageTeaching, #Rstats & #OpenScience! 🤓

I also work as a freelance conference interpreter (🇫🇷 🇬🇧 🇩🇪) and like trains 🚄, bicycles 🚲, tea 🫖, cake 🍰 & emoji! 😇

#ALS / #MND / #ELA / #SLA = same miserable disease abbreviated and translated into multiple languages. Did you know that for years, private research funds from Dan Doctorow, et al. were more than NIH budget? — and conventional economic impact analysis always "undercounts" aggregate impact because most sufferers are dead within five years of diagnosis, so prevalence is relatively low across population.

Hearing the news about Ady — and every other ALS death — absolutely sucks.
