Look who was back on the Cliffs of Moher yesterday?
Always great to see the Puffins (Fratercula arctica) return to their breeding colonies for the season. Hopefully they have a good one

From a 2021 blog post:
Adult puffin parents 'practice "bill-loading" — they will store anywhere from 5 to 20 small fish crosswise in their bill to carry the food back to their chick."

While we were all watching the penguins, no one noticed the puffins moving against us.

“Nesting season is over, chicks have left their burrows and puffins are gone by now. It’s incredible to think that these cute little creatures will spend the next 8 months on the open and rough waters of the Atlantic ocean.” - photographer Andrija llic

Puffins!
I often wonder why I bother lugging the big camera around when iPhones are so damn good these days. Then I get a shot like this. #puffins #Iceland #birdphotography
#Iceland day 3. . Lots of driving and lots of rain. Black sand and columnar basalt beaches, more waterfalls, anxiety over running out of gas, up close and personal with bazillions of puffins, and the northernmost southernmost point in the world.
I tend to be the least squee person in any given room but OMG!!! PUFFINS!!! They are utterly charming.

Feeling cute, will absolutely not delete later.
A picture-perfect Puffin gazing upwards, while taking a breather amidst the hustle and bustle of a busy clifftop colony on the island of Skomer. A penny for his or her thoughts?
"OK, who ordered the fish?!?"—Me, if I was a Puffin.
(Other Puffins, rolling their eyes—"Every. Single. Time."

#Puffins can hold multiple small fish in their beaks like this because they have small barbs on their tongues, and more in their beaks, to hold the fish in place. Their beaks are also designed to exert equal pressure from front to back.
Foula, Shetland, where the cliff cuts inward in the foreground you will see a person (if you look closely) they are standing next to a deep crack in the cliffs, this is probably the best place in Shetland to watch Puffins #foula #Shetland #puffins #Shetlandscenery #Shetlandnature #birdwatching #Scotland
