I really shouldn't be astonished, but I am 😵.

This is, of course, utter abuse of user data, but what's even worse is that Google allows this.

#Conversations was taken off Google Play, and forced to remove its contacts linking feature for #privacy reasons, despite the fact that no contact data was ever uploaded to any servers, yet #Citymapper is allowed to share highly sensitive precise location data with third parties for the sake of #profit?!

🤬 Goodbye Citymapper!!

Thankfully we're not exactly short of #opensource alternatives: I love how #Öffi displays the timetables, but we also have #Transportr and KDE's #KTrip (which not only works on Android but also on #mobilelinux).

Everyone who uses a Chromium based browser needs to try this: github.com/deepjyoti30/startpa

EDIT: #firefox as well, apparently.

It's a highly customizable "new tab" that is installed by git cloning the repository and then unpacking the extension manually, which is exactly what you want for something like this; that way, everything is run 100% locally, and nothing phones home.

I just got done setting it up with all of my browser profiles, to give them each a unique name for the new tab, so that Qtile has individual window titles to match against rules, so that I can just autostart all of them at once and have them all sorted into their respective workspaces (you can't get me to call them "groups," lol) without having to touch anything.

It's the little things; it really is.

🌍 Accessibility matters for everyone.

Whether permanent or temporary, disability can affect us all at some point in our lives. That’s why accessibility isn’t a bonus feature: it’s a necessity.

At Jami, we’re committed to making private communication truly inclusive. From screen reader support to keyboard navigation, here’s where we stand and where we’re going: jami.net/how-accessible-is-jam

DJ Slope's #YouTube ban, likely triggered by an automated #Google Drive flag, is a warning about over-reliance on big tech. One misstep can erase your digital life. To protect #privacy and control, self-host whenever possible, avoid centralizing data, use end-to-end encrypted tools, and keep services separate. Don’t wait for a ban to realize how fragile your online presence really is.

🎭 Mask up. Both kinds help.

WIRED · The WIRED Guide to Protecting Yourself From Government SurveillanceBy Andy Greenberg

"The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized."

What ICE does is, excluding their decision to wear masks, unconstitutional.

Their right to hide their identity is protected explicitly by the Fourth Amendment, and so is mine, and yours, and everyone else's.

In this regard specifically, you're not going to beat them, so you might as well join them.

If you want to walk down the street while wearing a mask for some reason that has nothing to do with COVID, or simply to hide your face, or for no particular reason whatsoever, you sure can.

Your person includes your face.

Just a reminder to please strip trackers from links before sharing them, and before using a link if it has one.

There is one exception, of course, and that's if you're using someone's affiliate link on purpose; you shouldn't strip the tracker in that case, obviously, because you want them to get paid. Otherwise, it doesn't benefit anyone when you use a link with a tracker, except whoever would like to track you.

This can be automated in a number of different ways. If you're on Android, you can use the same app I do, which is called Léon. It's FOSS, distributed under the GPL-3.0 license, available on the Google Play Store as well as F-Droid.
