Given that I want to target i486 with @OS1337 but don't want to deal with obsolete hardware that is dying of old age, I think it's more fitting to consider a sort-of mainboard to shove some 486SX-SOM with PC/104-Plus on and have the few necessities hooked up to it. Maybe even put it inside a THINN #Pizzabox-style #case?

It would also make a new "bridge" machine to interface old PCI & ISA hardware and allow connecting i.e. a #QuadFlop and roll with that...

Thoughts, @rasteri @polpo @TechTangents @lazygamereviews @foone ??

@jbqueru Also I hope for #RISCv to be the #ISA of the future for long-term #OpenSourceHardware and support.

#ARM64 - just like #amd64 - is yet another proprietary ISA and almost all devices with it in terms of #Laptops have #AntiRepairDesign like #Apple's #MacBook|s that self-destroy their #SSD|s which also contains it's #EFI / "#BridgeOS", making machines with fried SSDs 'braindead'

And yes, #RAM to also fails and making it not fully replaceable and upgradeable is inherently bad and I'm still mad at @frameworkcomputer for their botched #FrameworkDesktop #PC!

  • Cuz it's neither necessary nor beneficial for a #Desktop PC, unlike with the #Framework12 where the #SoC used only supports single channel and a single SODIMM so it makes sense for them to take that into account.

Oh no, Openbuilds goes out of business 😓

The CEO Mark Carew invented the V-Slot extrusion in 2013. We use them on the Bear because the V shape offered an easy alignment during the assembly and more flexibility for the printed parts (no support needed).

Everything must go, check them out:

🌟 **3D Printer Recommendations Needed!** 🌟

I’m diving into the world of additive manufacturing and need your help!

I’m looking for an inexpensive 3D printer (under $500) that’s perfect for a free and open-source software (FOSS) enthusiast like me.

🔍 Here are my criteria:
- **Budget:** Under $500
- **User-Friendly:** Easier to start with than a Voron 2.4
- **Hacking-Friendly:** I’d love the ability to tinker and customize!

What 3D printer would you recommend for someone just starting out? Share your thoughts and experiences in the comments! Your insights will help me make the right choice. Thank you! 😊

Continued thread

I really think that #OpenSourceHardware will gradually change the world, because OSH devices will persist as proprietary devices become more complex, shitty, unreliable, and (most importantly) unrepairable.

It's like a kind of pseudo-natural selection; you could use the corporate thing that's dirt cheap, but is locked-down, packed with ads, and designed to fail, or you can use an open design that isn't as exciting, but is stable, does exactly what you need, and can be repaired relatively easily

Die #OpenSourceHardware Konferenz in Dresden war großartig, aus Forschung, Bildung, Sozialwissenschaften, Industrie und Makerszene waren viele Menschen vertreten.

Ein gelungener Auftakt, eine Fortsetzung folgt:

#savethedate 21.-24.10.2025 (Chemnitz)

#OpenSource und insbesondere #OpenSourceHardware ist heute um einiges weiter und auf dem Weg neue Standards und Innovationen hervorzubringen.
