Ellen's Very Southern Voice<p>Y'all, I need help. I can't get my deleted emails off my MacBook Air. I have watched the YouTube videos, gone on all the forums. I've deleted the trash, the archives, the ultimate trash. Waited 48 hours (it's been weeks). My storage setting won't move, and it's all email. Suggestions?</p><p>UPDATE: After a talk with Apple Support, I managed to find thousands of 8 year old emails in my Recovery folder, deleted them, and finally cleared up some storage.</p><p>Tx to all who responded!</p><p><a href="https://writing.exchange/tags/tech" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>tech</span></a> <a href="https://writing.exchange/tags/Mac" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Mac</span></a> <a href="https://writing.exchange/tags/Macbook" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Macbook</span></a></p>

Ramin Honary<p><span class="h-card"><a class="u-url mention" href="https://social.linux.pizza/@theDuesentrieb" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>theDuesentrieb</span></a></span> I asked for the highest-spec computer the company would buy me (which turned out to be an Apple MacBook M2). I then promptly installed a QEMU-based emulator and installed Debian Linux into the emulator. The emulated disk is fully encrypted. I allow the VM full use of all CPU cores and 100% of all memory and disk space.</p><p>If you do get a Apple computer, I highly recommend you buy <a href="https://mac.getutm.app/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">UTM</a> from the app store, it is by far the most cost-effective option, and works extremely well with Debian Aarch64. Once you install the <code>qemu-guest-agent</code> package onto Linux, the Linux screen resolution will automatically match the <a class="hashtag" href="https://fe.disroot.org/tag/macbook" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#MacBook</a>, copy-paste works seamlessly between <a class="hashtag" href="https://fe.disroot.org/tag/linux" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Linux</a> and <a class="hashtag" href="https://fe.disroot.org/tag/macos" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#MacOS</a>. Desktop environments like <a class="hashtag" href="https://fe.disroot.org/tag/cinnamon" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Cinnamon</a>, <a class="hashtag" href="https://fe.disroot.org/tag/xfce" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Xfce</a>, <a class="hashtag" href="https://fe.disroot.org/tag/gnome" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Gnome</a>, and <a class="hashtag" href="https://fe.disroot.org/tag/kdeplasma" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#KDEPlasma</a> all allow you to select <a class="hashtag" href="https://fe.disroot.org/tag/hidpi" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#HiDPI</a> scaling which allows Linux to take full advantage of the <a class="hashtag" href="https://fe.disroot.org/tag/apple" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Apple</a> “retina” display (it looks beautiful). The one and only drawback is that <a class="hashtag" href="https://fe.disroot.org/tag/qemu" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#QEMU</a> cannot use Apple’s hardware multimedia codecs, so it falls back to software codecs, and the CPU just can’t keep up with things like video conferencing, or often even ordinary 720p video playback. I use Mac OS for only multimedia applications and video conferencing. For everything else, I continue to use Linux.</p><p>I recommend the bridge networking adapter so you can have two-way network communications between Linux and MacOS, this allows for file transfer between Mac and Linux via <code>rsync</code>. The trade-off is that every time your Apple computer switches computers networks (e.g. between home and office), you must reset the networking services in Linux. If you choose the NAT network option Linux will always have network access directly via the MacOS interface, but you will not be able to easily transfer files between Mac and Linux.</p><p>The keyboard is the hardest thing to get used to, mostly that “super” and “alt” are swapped. Be sure to transpose those keys in the <a class="hashtag" href="https://fe.disroot.org/tag/utm" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#UTM</a> configuration. It is easy to configure the Apple keyboard to (for example) make caps-lock another control key.</p><p><a class="hashtag" href="https://fe.disroot.org/tag/tech" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#tech</a> <a class="hashtag" href="https://fe.disroot.org/tag/computers" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#computers</a></p>

@jbqueru Also I hope for #RISCv to be the #ISA of the future for long-term #OpenSourceHardware and support.

#ARM64 - just like #amd64 - is yet another proprietary ISA and almost all devices with it in terms of #Laptops have #AntiRepairDesign like #Apple's #MacBook|s that self-destroy their #SSD|s which also contains it's #EFI / "#BridgeOS", making machines with fried SSDs 'braindead'

And yes, #RAM to also fails and making it not fully replaceable and upgradeable is inherently bad and I'm still mad at @frameworkcomputer for their botched #FrameworkDesktop #PC!

  • Cuz it's neither necessary nor beneficial for a #Desktop PC, unlike with the #Framework12 where the #SoC used only supports single channel and a single SODIMM so it makes sense for them to take that into account.

I have a 2006 MacBook 1,1 that originally came with OS X 10.4. I'd like to install the original OS on it, however I don't have any of the original CDs.

I've *acquired* (ahem) an ISO of 10.4.5 from archive.org (archive.org/search?query=os+x+) and naively dd'ed it to a USB stick. (making sure I got the intel version)

It starts booting but then displays the circle with a diagonal line through it symbol and doesn't go any further.

So, how would I go about restoring this computer to its original OS? It's currently running 10.6.8, and there's no recovery partition on the disk.

#Krunner froze my entire #KDE Plasma desktop just from writing up a 'long', simple math equation while I was calculating some of my expenses lol. My desktop is completely unresponsive now and I couldn't do anything about it, not even Caps Lock on my keyboard respond. All I can see is my applet that monitors RAM usage last reported to be at 97%.

I'm sure about half of it is probably
#Firefox, but I'm also certain the rest was caused by Krunner since I wasn't really doing anything else - as much as I love KDE Plasma, time and time again I'm getting closer and closer to upgrading to 64GB of RAM, which sounds hellllla ridiculous for a regular ol' desktop and not a homelab server.

Forreal tho, as much as I despise
#macOS, how is it that my #MacBook Air M1 can fly with pretty much the same workflow with just 8GB of RAM and never encounter any types of freezes, at most it just feels sluggish (which is just a regular macOS thing), meanwhile this much more powerful machine with 32GB of RAM just freaking... dies from doing simple math calculations on Spotlight?

Bin schon gespannt. Mal sehen wo es dann echt weh tun wird. Und wo es kompliziert wird.

I have a loaner Macbook to aid in troubleshooting some issues one of our fully remote people has been having. He is the only person on the team with a Mac.

Holy shit after not using macOS for a decade I find it nearly unusable now.

For instance by default the only way to view your home folder in finder is through a keyboard shortcut. That’s STUPID.

I just want to figure out this guy’s problems and give this POS right the hell back to IT.
