Kevin Karhan :verified:<p>I mean, I'd not have any issues with a <em>"shitty"</em> <a href="https://infosec.space/tags/Netbook" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Netbook</span></a> if it's prized acceptable.</p><ul><li>And not €220+ for a Laptop with an <a href="https://infosec.space/tags/Atom" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Atom</span></a> <a href="https://infosec.space/tags/Z8350" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Z8350</span></a> &amp; 2GB RAM and a 32GB eMMC that was €199 at lauch 10 years ago and €149 5 years ago.</li></ul><p>Cuz then I might be better off buying a used <a href="https://infosec.space/tags/ThinkPad" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ThinkPad</span></a> with <a href="https://infosec.space/tags/USBc" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>USBc</span></a>, remove the dead battery and stap a Powerbank to it.</p><ul><li>Speaking of dead <a href="https://infosec.space/tags/LaptopBatteries" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>LaptopBatteries</span></a>: I propably have to mod my <a href="https://infosec.space/tags/X230tablet" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>X230tablet</span></a> so I can <a href="https://infosec.space/tags/DIY" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>DIY</span></a> some replacement battery.</li></ul><p>Tho I'd rather start the <a href="https://infosec.space/tags/NUCbook" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>NUCbook</span></a> project instead or buy a <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://fosstodon.org/@frameworkcomputer" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>frameworkcomputer</span></a></span> / <a href="https://infosec.space/tags/Framework12" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Framework12</span></a> instead...</p>
Kevin Karhan :verified:<p><span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://mastodon.social/@bastetfurry" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>bastetfurry</span></a></span> <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://hachyderm.io/@janet_catcus" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>janet_catcus</span></a></span> the only thing cooler would be if they did a <a href="https://infosec.space/tags/transparent" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>transparent</span></a> version, but I also know why they didn't and instead chose said muted colour pallet: As those are easily sourceable, child-safe (if not medical- or food-grade), and available as recycling plastics. Also said colours don't directly show ABS's yellowing under sunlight that distinctively.</p><p>Keeping costs down, compared to the high prices of optically clear, non-discoloured plastic ehich also tends to be more brittle, and also may not be an option due to the way they pulled a <em>"<a href="https://infosec.space/tags/ThinkPadnium" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ThinkPadnium</span></a>"</em> style metal reinforcement of the chassis, as they clearly worked out a mix of elastic deformation (TPU), lightweight flexing and stiffening is the way to make a machine that is more forgiving in terms of abuse without designing it to be an unwieldy, heavy industrial appliance.</p><p>So yeah, I do want to see <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://fosstodon.org/@frameworkcomputer" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>frameworkcomputer</span></a></span> release the <a href="https://infosec.space/tags/Framework12" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Framework12</span></a> and maybe some compact <a href="https://infosec.space/tags/Desktop" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Desktop</span></a> case that is essentially allowing to shove a Framework 12 or <a href="https://infosec.space/tags/Framework13" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Framework13</span></a> mainboard and keyboard in and have a low-footprint unit like the <a href="https://infosec.space/tags/RaspberryPi" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>RaspberryPi</span></a> <a href="https://infosec.space/tags/Pi400" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Pi400</span></a> &amp; <a href="https://infosec.space/tags/Pi500" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Pi500</span></a> units. Or just some case one can bolt onto <a href="https://infosec.space/tags/VESA" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>VESA</span></a> mounts at a screen (similar to a <a href="https://infosec.space/tags/ThinkStation" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ThinkStation</span></a> Tiny / <a href="https://infosec.space/tags/ThinkCentre" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ThinkCentre</span></a> Tiny) and use those for <a href="https://infosec.space/tags/Classrooms" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Classrooms</span></a>.</p><p>I hope they have some nice <a href="https://infosec.space/tags/Stylus" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Stylus</span></a> slot &amp; lanyard option similar to the <a href="https://infosec.space/tags/X230Tablet" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>X230Tablet</span></a> I still daily-drive today.</p>
