I haven't been Mastodoning much lately. It's dance competition season for the grandkids and I had a sewing retreat. But the biggest thing for me is thinking through all of the logistics for my grand #Korea tour that starts in just over 3 weeks. As of today, all of my accommodation has been booked, with a few spots that were trickier than others. One ferry has been booked but most other transport isn't yet available to be booked. Connecting with people along the way. Excited!!

Firefighting is hard enough here in the US. But South Korea, suffering from horrendous fires now, has its own set set of challenges.

“A combination of an aging society and a reliance on temporary workers meant older people were disproportionately on the frontlines tackling South Korea's devastating wildfires this week.”

“About 73% of South Korea's 9,472 seasonal wildfire fighters are over 60-years-old, according to the forest service's latest data, often the only people available to work such schedules.

“The position has no age limit and pays $50 per day, employed during January-May and November-December periods, according to the service's website.”

And sadly, some of those older firefighters have died, including a 73-year-old pilot who died when his helicopter crashed.

Strong winds, dense forest and unusually dry weather - that's the deadly combination that experts say is fuelling the largest wildfires in South Korea's history.

The inferno in the south-east has burned through 35,810 hectares (88,500 acres) as of Thursday - that's about half the size of New York City - killing 27 people so far and displacing tens of thousands.
