This is a view of Rio Paine downstream of Paine falls in Torres del Paine National Park in the Patagonian area of Chile. Here the river runs through a narrow gorge creating bubbling rapids as it runs toward one of the lakes in the area.

Alcantara Gorge 5, Francavilla di Sicilia, Sicily, Italy

Several thousand years ago, the river bed was blocked by a lava flow from Mount Etna. As the lava was cooled much more quickly by the water than it would have done otherwise, it crystallised in the form of columns. Over the next millennia, the river naturally eroded a channel through these columns, resulting in impressive gorges and ravines, such as the Alcantara Gorges (Gole dell'Alcantara) next to Francavilla di Sicilia, where the Peloritani mountains end. – Wikipedia

"Do you want to go camping?"

"Sure! When?"

"Right now."

"Um. Okay? Where are we going?"

"A recreation area called flaming #gorge"

"Is it pretty?"

"Oh, yes. Very. Red rocks. Vistas. Water. You'll like it!"

"Is that why you want to go?"

"No, not at all. I want to go because there's a campground there where the cell service is terrible, and I want to go off grid so I can't be served a subpoena."

"La la la, I can't hear you."

"For the best."

#China pushes ahead with huge — and controversial — #dam in #Tibet
Chinese authorities are pressing ahead with plans to build a series of enormous hydropower dams across a #gorge in the #Himalayas that is three times as deep as the Grand Canyon, despite concerns raised by Tibetan #humanrights groups and New Delhi.
An estimate from the Chongyi Water Resources bureau put the potential #hydropower output at triple that of the #ThreeGorgesDam. msn.com/en-us/news/world/china

I went swimming in a gorge at dusk, surrounded by fish, dragonflies and a horse drinking at the water’s edge. The water was clear, so that you could see everything when you went under, but the undertow was so powerful and fast that you felt it tugging at the outer edge of you even in the shallows, like the first time you touch a car’s accelerator.
