So, Cathode Ray Dude made me a kind gift of a portable SSD, and so even though I had some partitions set aside on my desktop PC's main drive for a dual boot, it would probably be quite a bit easier to use the SSD for this purpose. #GhostBSD second boot?
There's some part of our addled mind-brain that really wants to do a dual boot setup and I'm not sure why. Maybe it's just a childhood nostalgia thing. We were happiest on #computers in the 1990s and trying wacky stuff like ternary boots (Win98 / NT / Linux, Win98 / Linux / BeOS, stuff like that.)
Gosh remember when you could get a PowerPC #Macintosh with a "PC card" in it? I don't mean a PCMCIA card, I mean a card with an Intel or equivalent processor on it, and you could switch back and forth between MacOS and Windows.

With all excitement and bling floating around I am enjoying my time today on GhostBSD Mate edition. Well rounded, everything works ootb, quiet styling (I've turned on a Dracula theme of course ;-).
Plus'es: samba , VLC, sound, LibreOffice, generic feel, the Stations (backup, software), sudo (I prefer doas, but newcomers will recognize sudo), install and go.
BSD generic: volume settings (mixer pcm etc), wifi (on a 2018 mini pc with Ryzen 2500U, seriously?) and of course BT are generic issues. Can be solved, but still.
Oh, and I forgot to mention that GhostBSD totally takes care of graphics drivers, dbus et al. I mean DisplayPort at 185hz ootb, great!
All in all a nice one , recommended!

Do be so kind to explain to me like I'm five, what you've written here in the code block
Do you use a special client to get the markdown language or do you know it by heart?

Can someone be kind to point me to documentation in freeBSD so I can change the font size of the console font at will?
It's unreadable in ghostBSD and it's too big in freeBSD relative to my IPS LED panels resolutions
Hello experts of #FreeBSD #GhostBSD, question from a total ZFS newbie. I'd like to install FreeBSD and GhostBSD in parallel on my Thinkpad. Yes, only one SSD, so no playing around with all the cool features, but learning. Which partition layout do you recommend? Or do I miss the "elegant“ way to have both BSDs completely? Thanks in advance for enlightening me.

He tried GhostBSD — and liked it
https://technophobeconfessions.wordpress.com/2025/03/18/first-use-on-ghostbsd/
Just tried latest GhostBSD 25.01-R14.2p1 release on ThinkPad X220.
Works really well.
The only thing that I needed to tweak were Fonts rendering settings:
- DPI: 76
- Smoothing: Grayscale
- Hinting: None
After that (and logout/login cycle) looks really well.
#Poll: are you "dog-fooding" #BSD?
Unlike previous polls () I have tried really hard to make sure the options make sense. Select the lowest item in the list that is true for you:
Of the ten options, the first four are for those that don't use BSD regularly (let's say at least once per week).
The fifth option ("VPN/server") is for someone who uses BSD on a server they manage, but don't have physical access to.
The sixth ("at work") through eighth ("secondary laptop/desktop") is for those who regularly use some variant of BSD, but not as a primary daily driver.
The ninth and tenth options are for "dog-fooding"
Oh, right, and I'm sorry, but it really must need be said: MacOS, iOS, and other Apple products do not count. Sorry again. I will count any FOSS BSD-like OSes like #OpenIndiana, though.
I will also count retro commercial Unixes, if you're actually daily-driving them. ;)
Playing around with the live #GhostBSD iso to see what works and what doesn't. I knew my AX200 WiFi wouldn't be full speed and I get 19Mbps by 4.26Mbps on my 1Gb by 110Mb connection. It's not a deal breaker as WiFi is only used when I take my laptop out and it is useable. Most of the time it's connected by cable so full speed.
All sound works onboard and HDMI, I haven't tried the Prometheus fingerprint reader as yet as I don't use it in Linux. Suspend using zzz seems to work OK without issue too. Tried everything to get sound out of my gen 1 Scarlett 6i6 but it is having none of it, but I did expect that as researched earlier. Dropping to a 2i2 isn't a problem really. I need to think some more about this.
