Mika<p>Welp, <a href="https://sakurajima.social/tags/PewDiePie" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#PewDiePie</a> has opened the floodgates to the <a href="https://sakurajima.social/tags/Linux" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Linux</a> community now that he's <b>actually</b> done a full video explaining his move to Linux, why he did it, and why he thinks others should ditch <a href="https://sakurajima.social/tags/Windows" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Windows</a><span>.<br><br>I honestly expected a </span><i>nothing burger</i><span> video with not much meaning/input to it, esp to someone who's already on Linux, but his points were pretty interesting. Some of his takeaways:<br><br>- He was tired of </span><a href="https://sakurajima.social/tags/Microsoft" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Microsoft</a>'s bullshit concerning ads, <a href="https://sakurajima.social/tags/AI" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#AI</a> slop, and bloat - and noted how he really supports the idea of <a href="https://sakurajima.social/tags/FOSS" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#FOSS</a>, and gave the example of how cool it is that <a href="https://sakurajima.social/tags/Valve" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Valve</a> saw the issue on putting all of their/our eggs (shares) in Windows' basket and addressed that by building on top of an existing FOSS project, <a href="https://sakurajima.social/tags/Wine" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Wine</a> to then develop <a href="https://sakurajima.social/tags/Proton" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Proton</a>, which as a result has unlocked and enabled the expansive <a href="https://sakurajima.social/tags/gaming" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#gaming</a> scene that we have today not just for the <a href="https://sakurajima.social/tags/SteamDeck" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#SteamDeck</a><span> but all Linux users as a whole.<br><br>- He surprisingly loves the customisation aspect of Linux and how everything is modular - which meant we could change things like the GUI (desktop environment) and customise it as desired. He even (appropriately) used the term, </span><i>ricing</i><span> lol.<br><br>- He, even more surprisingly, loves the fact that there are many Linux distros to choose from - when some find this to be somewhat a </span><i>hurdle</i>. He highlighted how you should just pick one and move forward, which is often true - this choice doesn't really matter as much these days (if ever). His choice was <a href="https://sakurajima.social/tags/LinuxMint" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#LinuxMint</a><span>, the distro he's tried 15 years ago.<br><br>- He noted how, like anything, Linux isn't perfect and there may be sacrifice(s) needed - like how some apps may only be available on Windows, for </span><a href="https://sakurajima.social/tags/macOS" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#macOS</a>, and likewise for Linux. His <i>sacrifice</i> was <a href="https://sakurajima.social/tags/Adobe" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Adobe</a> <a href="https://sakurajima.social/tags/Photoshop" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Photoshop</a>, but he was happy to ditch the thing (which costed him 60 USD just to unsubscribe), and his chosen alternative was... <a href="https://sakurajima.social/tags/GIMP" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#GIMP</a> - I know some might not agree, but he liked it 😂<span><br><br>- He mentioned how searching (locally) on Windows is garbage, and everyone knows that's just... objectively true. Like him, I too was amazed how local search actually JUST WORKS and is super fast on Linux, unlike on Windows or macOS.<br><br>- He noted how goddamn easy and intuitive installing/updating/managing apps are on Linux by using the system's package manager (app store), rather than having to look up the app installer online and dodging all of the shady sites with malwares and so on.<br><br>- As if this wasn't enough, Pewds really went down a fucking rabbit hole, almost putting to 'shame' for most, all </span><i>average</i> Linux users (incl myself) by literally installing/using <a href="https://sakurajima.social/tags/ArchLinux" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#ArchLinux</a> on his laptop, which is normal, 'cept he's not using a regular DE like <a href="https://sakurajima.social/tags/KDE" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#KDE</a> or <a href="https://sakurajima.social/tags/Gnome" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Gnome</a> but he instead, opted for a tiling manager, <a href="https://sakurajima.social/tags/Hyprland" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Hyprland</a> with <a href="https://sakurajima.social/tags/Rofi" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Rofi</a>, <a href="https://sakurajima.social/tags/Waybar" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Waybar</a><span> and all lol.<br><br>Anyway, it's a pretty cool video - and I underestimated Pewds' love for tinkering and using the terminal, so much so that I hope his users don't think that they </span><b>actually</b><span> need to use the terminal for the things he did haha.<br><br></span>▶️ <a href="https://youtu.be/pVI_smLgTY0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">https://youtu.be/pVI_smLgTY0</a></p>

The failure to finish booting occurred after i did a system update after not doing so for several months. OS was <a href="https://infosec.space/tags/SparkyLinux" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SparkyLinux</span></a> Testing / semi-rolling. Afaict, whatever caused the damage did a pretty good job:</p><ul><li>the <a href="https://infosec.space/tags/bootloader" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>bootloader</span></a> had vaporised</li><li>the <a href="https://infosec.space/tags/LUKS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>LUKS</span></a> <a href="https://infosec.space/tags/encryption" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>encryption</span></a> seems to have been damaged [even booting from a Live usb stick couldn't unlock the drive, my LUKS pswd being rejected despite absolutely certainly being correct]; it accepts my LUKS password during boot, then says "Slot 0 opened", then... just sits there, evermore. Sigh. </li></ul><p>I considered trying to repair the bootloader via a <a href="https://infosec.space/tags/chroot" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>chroot</span></a>, but even if that succeeded i frankly had little appetite to then do battle with a sulky LUKS. This pc is a very old clunker, spinning rust HDDs only, merely 8 GB RAM, i7 though old model, &amp; i'd repurposed it to be my lounge-room media pc several months ago without bothering to change anything about its extant OS... &amp; tbh Sparky had been wearing a bit thin on me anyway for a coupla months in this role. </p><p>So i decided not to bother attempting repairs, &amp; instead make a clean break with an alternative distro that i feel should be just about ideal for this use as a media pc, whose only function is to run a browser, &amp; my VPN app, for my nightly movies &amp; shows streaming. As such, i really just don't wanna be arsed with running updates on it often, &amp; generally mollycoddling it like i do with my <em>real</em> pooter [<a href="https://infosec.space/tags/ArchLinux" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ArchLinux</span></a> <a href="https://infosec.space/tags/KDE" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>KDE</span></a> <a href="https://infosec.space/tags/Plasma" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Plasma</span></a>]... i just want it to live happily in the darkness of my timber cabinet, asking little of me re upkeep, &amp; just purring away. </p><p>Thus, it now has <a href="https://infosec.space/tags/LinuxMint" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>LinuxMint</span></a> <a href="https://infosec.space/tags/LMDE" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>LMDE</span></a> 6.
