#OTD 30 March 1872 Charles Christey Cushnie was born in Carbondale, Pennsylvania. He was the oldest of 6 children born to immigrants David Park Cushnie and Margaret Maize, who had been pregnant on the ship from Glasgow. David had been a miner in Scotland and found employment in a coal mine in Pennsylvania. Charles followed his father into the coal mines, but as an engineer. He later became an electrician in a tin mill. He married and had 6 children, including my father's stepmother.

#OTD 29 March 1866 Isaac H Lake was born in or near Morgan County, Illinois, to Lindsay Lake and wife number 6, Elizabeth Witte Beagle. Elizabeth died sometime in the next 3 years. Lindsay remarried, but died when Isaac was 10. By age 14, Isaac was on his own, working as a farmhand. He later married in Arkansas and moved to Cape Girardeau, Missouri, where he became a stock dealer, dying without issue in 1943.

How much of that is true? US census records are very imperfect. In the census records between 1910 and 1940, his birthplace and that of his parents were terribly inconsistent. His death record has his parents as unknown. There may be two different men or it may reflect lack of family knowledge due to being orphaned.

#OTD 28 March 1934 Mary Jane Smith Pryor died in Oklahoma City. She was born 12 January 1853, the eldest living child of the farmer George Fraker Smith and Nancy Alley. When she was nine years old, the Civil War came to the area of Jasper, Tennessee, where the family lived. The Smiths survived the war and thrived. At 17, Mary Jane married Benjamin Franklin Pryor. Frank made some unwise money choices and my great-great-grandparents left to start over in Texas. They had 5 girls and one boy.

#OTD 27 March 1873 Joseph McFarlane was naturalized in the Circuit Court at Monroe County, Wisconsin. It had been 24 long years since he arrived in the United States. He had declared his intention to become a citizen in 1850. Did immigrants then (and now) understand the process? Was it procrastination? Joseph had acquired a homestead in the 1860's, but could not finalize the claim without becoming a citizen. That was certainly a pressing reason for my great-great-grandfather to complete the naturalization process.

#OTD 26 March 1882 Laura Eva Neff married James H. Phillips in Van Buren County, Iowa. The couple had a daughter, Lulu. The fate of both James and Lulu is a mystery. In 1886, Laura remarried to Thomas Newton Cantrill. They also had a daughter, Junie May. After about 23 years of marriage, Laura sought and was granted a divorce. Her fate is also a mystery. Because she was a cousin in my wild Maddox family, nothing would surprise me.

#OTD 25 March 1801 The shoemaker and widower Johan Jånsson Wolen married his second wife, Catharina Söderberg, in Salem parish, Stockholm County, exactly 10 years after his first marriage. In 1791, he had married Catharina Larsdotter Holmgren on March 25th, in Klara parish, Stockholm City. Johan needed to remarry quickly, as he had 2 young children. The baby died 4 days later at not quite 7 months old. Johan, brother of my 4th-great-grandfather, had only one child of 5 who survived to adulthood, but she died of tuberculosis at age 23.

For those #Genealogists who are interested, this video shows you how to copy your 23&Me results to #GedMatch , after you DOWNLOAD them from #23andMe .

#GedMatch has a host of great tools that allow you to continue analyzing your DNA and build your #FamilyTree with #GeneticGenealogy .

Be aware that law enforcement can also use this particular database. However, you must OPT IN to allow your data to be accessible to them. So far, they have been using it to help identify unknown "Jane/John Doe" bodies and solve #ColdCase crimes.

Yet another belated #3GoodThings:
- broke a brick wall, I had laying for nearly six years, while not being able to sleep between 2.30 and 4 AM (and found my speculations about his father's origin from back then even likelier in the evening)
- work was fun, despite I had to go to the office in presence
- started watching #TheDiplomat which was a bit tough to follow in English with all these political ranks without being completely sure about their meaning

#OTD 24 March 1887 Inga Lisa Fröling, age 67, died in Yxnerum parish, Östergötland. She had married just before her 26th birthday to a soldier, Paul Larsson Fröjd. They had three sons and a daughter. The eldest son, August, took over the soldier position when Paul died at only 48. The middle son emigrated to Michigan. The other two lived to adulthood and had no children. Inga Lisa lived with August and his wife, helping raise their 8 children. She was the youngest sister of my 3rd-great-grandfather.

It's official...
23&Me has filed for bankruptcy.

The company has been rejecting any buyout attempts, but their Board of Directors is now saying that a Court-supervised sale is the best path forward. Part of the reason for their financial troubles was a 2023 #DataBreach that affected millions of customers and hurt their credibility in the marketplace.

Yesterday, California's A.G. reminded consumers that they have the right to demand their data be deleted and that 23&Me destroy any genetic samples. (I would add that you also have the option of downloading your #DNA data and then uploading it to #GedMatch .)

#OTD 23 March 1842 Anna Barbara Voßeler was born in Tuningen, Württemberg, to Johann Michael Voßeler and Anna Irion. She was one of 11 children. Three died in infancy, one died as a toddler and Anna Barbara died at the age of 22. Though this family carries surnames that are also found in my ancestry, we don't seem to be closely related. They are part of researching a collateral line. Those 6 children whose details are not yet known to me will continue to ask that their stories be found.

#OTD 22 March 1870 Mary Ellen "Mollie" Vosseler was born near Decatur, Illinois. Her father, George, was a German immigrant about 60 years old. Her mother, Elizabeth Childers Wilson, was about 36 and the daughter of an Alabama farmer. Tragically, both parents died by the time Mollie was 10 and her older brother, John, was 12. The children lost touch with their Wilson brothers, as they were raised by their older Vosseler half-sister. Mollie disavowed her sister, which leaves me wondering why my great-grandmother hid her German relatives from her descendants.
