#libucl #configuration #formats

libucl -- a universal configuration library:

github.com/vstakhov/libucl

A really interesting project, and a premise which really works for different configurations.

This Is BSD-based, and is used in a lot of FreeBSD projects: #hikari. #pkg from #freebsd, etc.

I'm trying to give it some love as it needs it.

To that end, I have created the #libucl #irc channel on irc.libera.chat

Those of you interested, come by, say "hello".

I hope the maintainer(s) of #libucl do likewise. :)

Morning Fedi! Opinions on the DSD music format? I hear about it from places like this: qobuz.com/us-en/shop

But one of my friends say it's a pointless format because you can't really hear the difference, so it's better to get FLAC.

QobuzStreaming and music Downloads in 24-Bit Hi-Res - QobuzQobuz is the world leader in 24-bit Hi-Res downloads, offering more than 100 million tracks for streaming in unequalled sound quality (FLAC 16 Bits / 44.1kHz)

With jpg xl, can you choose how high quality you want to see the image, that is can you serve one file and different people can choose how they want to see it, according to how much data they are willing to download?

Could we do the same with video? Could we have just one torrent with one video file, and everyone could choose how much they want to download and still see the whole thing? 4k, 1080p, 720p, etc all in the same file, just choose how much you're willing to download?

Update. I've had similar experiences with PDFs. Some search committees insist that letters be signed printouts on letterhead stationery scanned into PDFs. Now that I'm semi-retired and do all my work remotely, I explain that I don't have a printer or scanner. Some committees forgive this deficiency. But one didn't, and I had to do some back-and-forth emailing with a supportive colleague to get the letter in the right format.

FediScience.orgpetersuber (@petersuber@fediscience.org)Search committees: Please don't require letters of recommendation to be signed printouts on letterhead stationery scanned into PDFs. Many of us work remotely without letterhead, printers, or scanners. Most of us lack clerical assistance. Virtually all of us find this format arbitrary and onerous. As one who has served on about 20 search committees, I can add that this format is completely unnecessary. #Academia @academicchatter@a.gup.pe

2/ I only post this because the misuse of "PDF" is a pet peeve.

Sorry to spell out the obvious. PDF is a file format, not a paywall. It has nothing to do with paywalls. PDFs can be #OpenAccess.

A related mistake is to use "the PDF" as a synonym for the version of record, as opposed to some other version, like a preprint or accepted author manuscript. Sorry. Any version can be a PDF, and the version of record can be any file format.

Update. #ArXiv will use a new #NIST tool to make mathematical notation easier to read for users with visual impairments.
nist.gov/news-events/news/2024

"ArXiv…will begin using the tool to make its papers available in #HTML. More than a quarter of the world’s population has a diagnosed vision impairment, and users of assistive technology indicate that #PDF formatting is their biggest barrier to arXiv use…For years there was no effective way to convert #LaTeX into #HTML."

#NISO just announced a new #standard "enabling the combination of arbitrary portions of content, data, semantics, & other resources from separate sources [e.g. articles, books, data sets, metadata schemes] into a single, standards-based format optimized for interchange, search, & display."
niso.org/publications/z39105-2

The new standard supports "machine-actionable #FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) materials."

I just updated my article "Resize a video with FFmpeg for Mastodon" with new parameters for #FFmpeg to convert a #video to a #WebM #container using the #VP9 #codec for #video and the #Opus codec for #audio which are all #open, #royaltyfree and well-supported #formats.

This way you can easily convert very heavy videos before uploading them to #Mastodon while remaining within the strict limits.
