petersuber<p>Update. I've had similar experiences with PDFs. Some search committees insist that letters be signed printouts on letterhead stationery scanned into PDFs. Now that I'm semi-retired and do all my work remotely, I explain that I don't have a printer or scanner. Some committees forgive this deficiency. But one didn't, and I had to do some back-and-forth emailing with a supportive colleague to get the letter in the right format.<br><a href="https://fediscience.org/@petersuber/110718374823742223" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">fediscience.org/@petersuber/11</span><span class="invisible">0718374823742223</span></a> </p><p><a href="https://fediscience.org/tags/Formats" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Formats</span></a> <a href="https://fediscience.org/tags/PDF" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>PDF</span></a></p>
petersuber<p>Update. I just remembered a related peeve, this time about Microsoft Word. Grown ups with PhDs employed by a major university once asked me to re-submit a letter of recommendation I wrote for a colleague because it wasn't in MS Word. It had to be in Word to be "official" (their word).<br><a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20190316204410/https://plus.google.com/109377556796183035206/posts/ErCof6Q6C8K" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">web.archive.org/web/2019031620</span><span class="invisible">4410/https://plus.google.com/109377556796183035206/posts/ErCof6Q6C8K</span></a></p><p><a href="https://fediscience.org/tags/Formats" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Formats</span></a> <a href="https://fediscience.org/tags/MSWord" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>MSWord</span></a></p>
petersuber<p>2/ I only post this because the misuse of "PDF" is a pet peeve. <br> <br>Sorry to spell out the obvious. PDF is a file format, not a paywall. It has nothing to do with paywalls. PDFs can be <a href="https://fediscience.org/tags/OpenAccess" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>OpenAccess</span></a>. </p><p>A related mistake is to use "the PDF" as a synonym for the version of record, as opposed to some other version, like a preprint or accepted author manuscript. Sorry. Any version can be a PDF, and the version of record can be any file format. </p><p><a href="https://fediscience.org/tags/Diction" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Diction</span></a> <a href="https://fediscience.org/tags/Formats" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Formats</span></a> <a href="https://fediscience.org/tags/PDF" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>PDF</span></a> <a href="https://fediscience.org/tags/ScholComm" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ScholComm</span></a> <a href="https://fediscience.org/tags/Versions" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Versions</span></a></p>
