"The UN World Food Programme says it has depleted all its food stocks in Gaza, where Israel has blocked deliveries of humanitarian aid for seven weeks.

"Today, WFP delivered its last remaining food stocks to hot meals kitchens," it warned. "These kitchens are expected to fully run out of food in the coming days."

Israel cut off aid on 2 March and resumed its offensive two weeks later after the collapse of a two-month ceasefire, saying it was putting pressure on Hamas to release its remaining hostages.

The UN says Israel is obliged under international law to ensure supplies for the 2.1 million Palestinians in Gaza. Israel says it is complying with international law and there is no aid shortage.

At the end of March, all 25 bakeries supported by the WFP in Gaza were forced to close after wheat flour and cooking fuel ran out. Food parcels distributed to families containing two weeks' rations were also exhausted.

Malnutrition is also rapidly worsening, according to the UN. Last week, one of its humanitarian partners screened 1,300 children in northern Gaza and identified more than 80 cases of acute malnutrition - a two-fold increase from previous weeks."

Fundraiser update: Hot meals 4 Starved Palestinian Kids in north Gaza

May 5th, 2024

by Hani Almadhoun, Organizer

"Salam and hello,

"Thank you for being here; your presence means a lot, especially to the families and children in #Gaza, both in #Rafah and in #BaitLahia.

"I've attached pictures from the last 48 hours at three of our service points. Just a reminder, we have two kitchens in the north and one food parcel partner, all in the north, and a soup kitchen in the south at Rafah, operating from a tent and serving thousands of internally displaced #Palestinians.

"Today, the Rafah kitchen cooked up a zucchini stew with meat and provided meals for 200 families. However, they informed me that there are still a hundred families going home without food. So, we've agreed to add another pot, making it six pots from the original two. I'm impressed by how the team in Rafah operates like a tight-knit crew, with everyone contributing ideas alongside their hard work. Despite losing their head Chef ten days ago, Roa, Rania, and Alaa are doing an outstanding job. For instance, when we got delayed in sending money, they improvised by preparing colorful pudding fortified with milk and nutrients, despite the heat and keeping the door open.

"In addition, in the north, we've sent additional funds for the two soup kitchens and food parcels from what's available. The women-led kitchen works four days a week, and they'll be working tomorrow, baking and preparing for food distribution. This group of women values each other's company and the opportunity to help other women, creating a safe space for each other. For example, even though the kitchen didn't operate today, half of its staff supported the original kitchen by helping bake Riqaq bread, layering seasoned rice, and adding garnish. Needless to say, the original kitchen elevated their game today with a rice Fatta dish that provided 350 meals, including delivery to a shelter center for people with disabilities. You'll see pictures from today's distribution attached.

"Lastly, we've completed a dozen food parcel distributions today for families in need. This week, we intend to distribute 100 bags of flour to families who can use them to share meals together.

"None of what we do would be possible without you and your attention. Keep advocating for a #ceasefire."

- Hani

Update from by Hani Almadhoun, Organizer, April 2, 2024

"Hello and Salam,

Yesterday was an incredibly difficult day for many of us as we witnessed the harrowing events unfolding at Al Shifa Hospital and the subsequent targeting of humanitarian workers. It's truly heartbreaking to witness such cruelty in Gaza, yet we strive to maintain hope amidst these challenges. The reality of the situation hit me especially hard, particularly when speaking with our photographer, Eshak, who was deeply affected by the firsthand images he documented.

Additionally, at least two more organizations are suspending humanitarian operations inside Gaza due to safety concerns, including one that ran a soup kitchen in #Jabalya, not far from our location.

However, despite these adversities, I choose to focus on the positive impact we are making together for the families we serve in both the north and the south.

In the north, our kitchen continues to innovate with the available ingredients. This week, they've incorporated rice and canned beans into dishes like super stew, alongside beloved local favorites made from local produce. Despite the increased demand, our team works tirelessly to serve everyone, even distributing dates and lemons to those in need. Thanks to your generosity, Mahmoud was able to purchase 700 pounds of lemons to distribute, greatly appreciated for making juice for fasting neighbors.

In the city of #Rafah in the south of Gaza, our kitchen rotates between savory and sweet dishes, with rice pudding being a popular favorite. Today, they prepared veggies and pasta for the community.

Despite facing challenges such as high transfer fees and liquidity issues, we are grateful for your unwavering support, enabling us to continue providing essential assistance to those in need. We remain committed to ensuring patron satisfaction and minimizing wait times for the families we serve, who are already enduring desperate circumstances.

The attached pictures highlight the impactful work being done in both the north and the south, and we hope they convey our sincere gratitude for your support. Running these kitchens is no easy task, but every day, we overcome obstacles to stand in solidarity with those who need us most. Thank you for making this possible.

I know these are special days for many Muslims who observe the last ten days of Ramadan, so we want to ensure we make plans for Eid and remember the children.

P. S. We are now exploring the possibility of opening a third kitchen."

A friend of mine just made me aware of this #Fundraiser for #Gaza.

Hot meals 4 Starved #Palestinian Kids in #NorthGaza

"Do you know what it’s like to watch your family starve? I do.

"My name is Hani Almadhoun, and my family and friends live in the North of Gaza, #Palestine. Most aid is being blocked at the border, and there isn’t nearly enough to fight back the famine or save my loved ones. So we decided to do something about it.

"My brother, Mahmoud Almadhoun, and his friends volunteered to start a soup kitchen in #BaitLahia, to provide hot meals to friends and neighbors. They bought four large pots, purchased wood for the fire, and risked their lives to dig up potatoes. They also purchased tomato paste and cooking oil, and three hours later, 120 families had food for the day. The next day 150 starved families ate from the kitchen.

"Word spread rapidly, and the next day, even more neighbors arrived. Mahmoud sprang into action, venturing out to procure ingredients for a fresh meal. He returned with leafy greens, onions, and mushrooms, crafting a new dish that was as delightful as it was nourishing. The kitchen's capacity has now expanded to accommodate meals for up to 3000 people daily, and the numbers continue to grow. For many, this was their first substantial meal in days, and the departure from canned food was a welcomed change that filled hearts with gratitude.

"You may wonder why these individuals can accomplish something that few have managed to do in the heart of starvation in Gaza. That would be a fair question.

- First, Bait Lahia has some farms where veggies and wild greens are now in season.
- We made sure they had the money to purchase these hard-to-find items.
- Additionally, they are located in the heart of the market, so they can easily spot any of these veggies and cooking essentials arriving at the market.
- They have also visited farms close to the Green Line to find veggies and have been lucky a few times. Once, they purchased overgrown zucchinis that should have been picked weeks ago.
- Mom and my sisters lovingly wake up early to peel and prep the food for the day's meals.

"Your assistance can help us bring sustenance to an area with minimal aid, where children face the harsh reality of starvation. This personal initiative, coordinated with our family in North Gaza, ensures transparency. Your contribution, starting at five dollars, can provide a hot meal to desperate families enduring challenging conditions, intentionally isolated from the rest of the world.

"Your $5, $10, $50 will go a long way with this initiative. We also need you to pray for their safety as they do this heroic work.

"The funds from #GoFundMe will be transferred to this crew in Gaza to make sure they still do this work."

Californians who need food aid -- 5.3 million people -- are being hit hard by the end of federal pandemic benefits. For a single person, monthly allotments are dropping from $281 to as little as $23.

Food banks are struggling to keep people fed.

' Instead of functioning as sources of emergency aid, food banks say they are becoming long-term supermarkets for Californians facing food insecurity. '
