@skribe Conversely, the cost of printing, distribution, and storage puts up a barrier to spamming people on other continents with mass quantities of low value slop.
Just think through the logistics of a hostile Eurasian state sending a mass quantity of printed materials to Australia or North America.
Or, for that matter, a hostile North American state sending a mass quantity of printed materials to Europe or Asia.
You would either need:–
a) At least one printing press on each continent;
b) You could try shipping the magazines, but they'd be a month out of date when they arrive; or
c) You could try flying them overseas, but that would be very expensive very quickly.
That's before you worry about things like delivery drivers (or postage), and warehouses.
These are less of an issue for books than they are for newspapers or magazines.
And if a particular newspaper or magazine is known to be reliable, written by humans, researched offline, and the articles are not available online, then there's potentially value in people buying a physical copy.
Big news flying around on Facebook the afternoon and into the late evening of April 1st is that Facebook appears to be taking down/disappearing Heather Cox Richardson's political newsletters and posts.
If you don't know who she is, it's an easy search.
I've got multiple people people saying this is happening for them personally - they can no longer see the posts - including some definitely Not Left people.
We've been expecting this out of Meta since Fuckerberg ripped off the mask and went full MAGA, so I guess here we are.

Just finished the book Meta doesn't want you to read: CARELESS PEOPLE by Sarah Wynn-WIlliams. I don't normally read tell all books but this one is worth a read. You can get through it quickly as it isn't a difficult read. But if you have friends and/or family that use Facebook and they are still capable of any kind of critical thought you should buy them a copy of the book. It's chilling.

It's the end of an era! Back in 2011, my friend Joe told me about #diaspora, an alternative to #facebook with no ads and good privacy. I joined Diasp.org, and was on it... until today, as that pod (instance) has just closed.
I am grateful to David the 'podmin' for running the pod for so long. He didn't want it to be a service, but rather a springboard for people to have control over their own data and #SocialMedia interactions. (Insert lecture about the European #socialism that built the #fediverse )
Several friends joined Diapora back in the day, I think @redfern was among them. But it never took off among my peers, not enough to displace facebook. And of course, #Mastodon later appeared, and is now far larger than D*.
Still, I have a soft spot for Diaspora. I found another pod and will stay there (too) for now. But it won't be the same, you never forget your first non-commerical social media account! I spent time looking through all my old posts and downloading photo, ah, #nostalgia!

"Careless People: A Cautionary Tale of Power, Greed, and Lost Idealism" by Sarah Wynn-Williams today.
Brought to my attention by Facebook's attempt to stop it, and winning a case against it being publicized.
These people are far worse than I thought, and my opinion was already very low.
All in one place gives a better picture of what's already been revealed in public.
From my subjective observations, #group features in #Mastodon would go a long way in making people move from #facebook to here. #Groups is what keeps many users from #migrating.
And user want to access these groups in one place, not several,
they want the possibility to create them to just be there, not to have to code or integrate.
People always think that big oligopolies like #Facebook, #Amazon, #Tesla, #Microsoft, #Google and others are omnipotent and unbeatable. Just remember, folks, Musk also assumed this, and now his stock is plummeting in a free fall. I have no good example, but you know what I mean. People just shouldn't put pressure on Tesla only; the same heat should also be shared with the other #oligarchs. #eatem #imho
Gibt es eigentlich iiiiirgendeinen Makroblogging-Dienst im #fediverse , der ein bisschen mehr Reichweite hat, bzw. wo mehr interagiert wird, vorzugsweise auch für deutsche Sprache. Ich schäme mich das zuzugeben, aber ich vermisse die Usability und die Möglichkeit für Galerien und Interessensgruppen von #Facebook wirklich sehr... *sniff*
