I think about how hard it's been to just survive the last three decades. The struggle to find my place in this world. Learning to human like a real human. Finding space to grow a little confidence in myself.

And I've been lucky. I was born with some strange but useful genes. I met tonnes of good people along my journey. Plus I was born at a good time in history, in a good economy.

Then I think, what about the other billions of people today who weren't as lucky as me?

If you'll allow me to promote myself briefly -- I'm giving away 10 *free* digital copies of my upcoming poetry collection:

"Poetic Nothing, Nothing Poetic - A collection of romantic, erotic, and existential poems"

To enter the giveaway, just go to garrettthomas.art, scroll down, and enter your details in the form.

The collection releases on Jan. 31st, 2025, available in e-book format with print coming shortly after

Why are we so afraid of dying? I mean, if I die tonight, does it really matter?

Is it simply because death is a mystery? Or is it that we feel life is too precious to let go?

What if life is the worst, and death is precious?

I think it’s because even with all the suffering, we enjoy the experience. Sugar, love, music, sex, flowers, rain…maybe we’ll miss it. Or maybe our consciousness ends.

I know I’m not afraid to die.

More than likely, within the next 3 or 4 generations, most of us will be so forgotten that no one even remembers our names.

Sitting here, I can name 7 of my 8 great-grandparents off the top of my head (maternal gpa's mother's name escapes me atm). I can even name 2 g-g-grands. But it's only bc I'm a 3rd-gen hobby genealogist.

Our great-grandchildren aren't likely to know or remember us, y'all.

Such is life on the pale blue dot.

A Short Stay in Hell (2011)
By Steven L. Peck

A man finds himself stuck in Hell in an (almost) endless library. There is a way out, but it’ll take a lot of time and effort to find it.

If you like dark humour and existential horror, I’d highly recommend this book. It’ll haunt you forever.

All the big companies in #AI have been saying that:
1. we are on the cusp of major breakthroughs in AI
2. this poses #existential risks to humanity, with AI people talking about their P(doom)
3. #regulation is needed to prevent really bad outcomes

So the California legislature is crafting #AISafety legislation and -- surprise, surprise -- ALL the big AI companies are against it! Makes all their talk sounds self-serving, doesn't it?

#Biden was not quitting …a personal & national #existential undertaking…a 'battle for the soul of the nation.'

“Top #leaders are driven by a quest for #immortality through their #leadership #legacy.…

“Biden is deservedly proud of his record…, having delivered a strong #economy w/plunging #inflation (7.5% to 2.7%), the lowest #unemployment (3.8%) in decades, #growth that is driving 80% of the #WorldBank’s forecast, & #EnergyIndependence w/ US becoming the world’s largest #energy exporter.

Speaking in #Atlanta, #Biden slammed #Trump over “who he #keepscompany with,” pointing to the former president’s #rally alongside Rep. Marjorie Taylor #Greene here in Rome, Georgia, and his #gushing review of a Friday night meeting with right-wing Hungarian Prime Minister #ViktorOrbán, before again describing Trump as an #existential #threat to the #republic.

⬆️ Land-locked #Ethiopia wants access to #RedSea, drawing sharp rebukes from BOTH #Egypt & #Somalia, threatening to #destabilize #HornOfAfrica.

Immediately after #Hamas #Oct7 [#coincidence], Ethiopia claimed it has a "natural right" to directly access Red Sea, and that permanent access to a Red Sea port is “an #existential matter” for it

Ethiopia lost sea access in the early 1990s upon #secession of its then-province #Eritrea following three decades war of liberation
