Shantell Powell
I'm not a fan of form rejection letters which include suppositions of what's wrong with your story.

My most recent rejection included "Sometimes a narrative can be excellent work but simply not be right for the journal. One common reason for this is that the text, though under 1000 words, isn't a flash narrative. This might mean your story would work better as a longer story, part of a longer story, or even poetry."

Another time, I received a form rejection that said my work might be offensive or poorly edited.

Lit mags, don't put stuff like this in your form rejections. If it's personalized and you want a writer to revise and resubmit, ok. But including this in all rejections comes across as condescending or alienating.

Sometimes the story is perfectly fine and just doesn't fit in your issue, and that's ok. I've had stories rejected with these sorts of copy/paste commentary that went on to win contests.

Writers, don't take this stuff personally. Maybe your story does need a bit more revision. Or maybe the form rejection was written by a crankyass. #WritingCommunity #LitMags #publishing #RejectionLetters

Alan Langford 🇨🇦🧤🧊摏
Sigh. Another week, another indie author all excited because they won a book award. Over the next week or two, we might see them wonder why the phone lines haven't lit up with interview requests, or why sales haven't spiked, even though they may have paid out handsomely to order cover stickers proclaiming their prize. I blogged about an earlier one of these the dubiously named "International Impact Book Awards", which got more problematic the deeper I looked (see https://alanlangford.com/.../06/parasitic-author-contests/).

In that post I mentioned that the Alliance of Independent Authors (ALLi) maintains an awards rating page. The awards mentioned above weren't listed, but this week another excited author won an "Independent Publisher Book Awards (IPPY)", and that contest is rated as "Caution", with the comment that "The site's FAQ notes that judges may not even read the books."

ALLi's caution rating is defined as: Contests with more serious concerns e.g excessive entry fees, exploitative contracts, conflicts of interest, or high-pressure sales.

Not only is the author out a US$85 entry fee, according to the ALLi, they are likely to be subjected to "Relentless marketing and up-selling," typically pitches to buy the aforementioned cover labels, physical trophies, etc. That's at least C$115 and probably much more that a cash-strapped author could have spent more effectively elsewhere.

#WritingCommunity

Anne
Oh my god. How humiliating. Honestly, I don’t understand why writers would want an AI to write their books unless it’s as a content mill to generate income which I think it’s being used for the most right now. Slop generation. Too bad. It can be so much more than that.

I just started using AI for some things and it’s been working well for me. I have a very foggy brain which has trouble holding onto things and having a robot hand to hold through the process keeps me on task.

I’ve been using AI to talk endlessly about the story I’m currently writing. No real person wants to be subjected to that much navel gazing.

I also ask it things like “find instances where I’ve accidentally changed tense”. You know. Practical stuff.

I give it samples of my writing and ask it to describe my writing style. Useful for formulating answers for when humans ask me about my writing (I’m assuming at some point in the future, people will ask me about my writing…).

I ask it research questions on story details (I use Perplexity which cites its sources so I can follow up).

I ask it for critiques on scenes and get it to ask me questions about what I’ve written which is especially useful for keeping my head in the game and helps me think about my story in ways I might not have (like good crit groups do but available without an appointment).

Perplexity has Spaces where you can upload your Story Bible, for example, and then when you analyze story scenes within that space, you can get it to look through your Story Bible as context so you don’t have to remember every single detail of, say, a trilogy (or, if your brain is anything like mine, a novel or even a short story). Ask for a list of lines that need revision and get to work.

Same with other story meta. Upload character sheets for it to reference so someone’s eyes or outfit or name or… won’t be changing mid-story.

You see where I’m going.

This, to me, is how to use ai in writing. Not giving it a story idea and having it write it for you. But, hey. You do you. You might even end up in the LA Times!

What say you? Do you use it for anything? Everything? Would you ever? Never? What about Grammarly or autocorrect or spellcheck?
