feddit.ukLibreOffice downloads on the rise as users look to avoid subscription costs | The free open-source Microsoft Office alternative is being downloaded by nearly 1 million users a week - Feddit UKcross-posted from: https://lemmy.world/post/27426660 [https://lemmy.world/post/27426660] > >Interest in LibreOffice, the open-source alternative to Microsoft Office, is on the rise, with weekly downloads of its software package close to 1 million a week. That’s the highest download number since 2023. > > >“We estimate around 200 million [LibreOffice] users, but it’s important to note that we respect users’ privacy and don’t track them, so we can’t say for sure,” said Mike Saunders, an open-source advocate and a deputy to the board of directors at The Document Foundation. > > >LibreOffice users typically want a straightforward interface, Saunders said. “They don’t want subscriptions, and they don’t want AI being ‘helpful’ by poking its nose into their work — it reminds them of Clippy from the bad old days,” he said. > > > >There are genuine use cases for generative AI tools, but many users prefer to opt-in to it and choose when and where to enable it. “We have zero plans to put AI into LibreOffice. But we understand the value of some AI tools and are encouraging developers to create … extensions that use AI in a responsible way,” Saunders said.

Trump modifications to Meta's moderation rules, 1/8

I remember reading articles about Meta giving in on Trump's so-called free speech demands in January - even before Trump was inaugurated. That said, I never went looking to the source, that is Meta's definition of "hateful conduct". Now, after having done so, it is glaringly obvious that Trump's (and Musk's) intolerant anti-woke agenda is directly reflected in the new rules.

“To friends of democracy around the world: we need your help.”

“Like most bullies, the regime can be constrained only if everyone stands up to the bullying – including you.

“First, if you are considering a trip to the United States, please reconsider. Why reward Trump’s America with your tourist dollars?

“Spending by non-Americans in the United States is a significant source of tax revenue and a major ‘export’ of this nation. There’s no reason for you to indirectly support Trump’s economy…”

The Guardian · The case for boycotting the United StatesBy Robert Reich

People of #Europe!
We must fight with #American social media. Not only because there are from the #USA which is no longer a reliable ally, but also because they made SUCH a massive monopoly in this aspect. We must propagate our #European #Fediverse. Spread the word! Don’t use their tech! Use what is ours and secure. Don’t sell data across the Atlantic

We've been seeing a lot of people who don't live in Europe promoting the boycott of US products and services.

We would love to know: where are you from? 🌍

“Now, Trump is set to increase prices even further with the tariffs implemented on Tuesday. Canada and Mexico are the United States’ largest trading partners”

*Canada and Mexico *were* the United States’ largest trading partners”

We are resolved to pivot away from US to get reliable trade agreements. NOT with a country that signs a trade agreement USMCA and then on a pretext (fentanyl) tears that agreement up and applies import taxes (tariffs)
#BuyCanadian #BoycottUs

I don't think that the 48.3% of Americans who voted against trumpists last year deserve a "#BoycottUS" and I remain inspired by and in solidarity with many American artists, scientists, public workers... who are the first to suffer under the current situation.
That said, Europe needs data security and protection from GAFAM hegemony in #cyberspace
Perhaps Americans themselves are safer and more free with #GOG #DeepL #Fairphone #arduino etc.
