It has been a while since I’ve provided an Eastern Bluebird update. The family in our front box has what I’ll call teenagers. Pretty soon they will be grown up. Looks like all five babies survived and are doing well.

Theres a concept in #whisky of “the angels share,” which is the amount of alcohol that evaporates during the aging process.
I just filled all our #birdfeeders and they’re all pretty anti-squirrel. Some by design, some by where I hang them. But inevitably some spills on the ground under the #birdfeeder. So I call that “the squirrels share.”
I did not realize until today that mourning doves wore sassy gold sequins at their necks! #birds #birdstodon #birdsofmastodon
A little bird told me that Spring is here...
(It's #HootinTootinTuesday again! Post some jokes or funny memes under this hashtag today, and bring lots of smiles to #Mastodon.)
Have some good news. We have 10x the piping plovers that we did in the 1980s. Things can get better and move in the right directions.

I heard... SILENCE.
This past week here in #AuroraIllinois , the weather has been pleasant & warmer. In the past, this kind of weather would be full of life, coming awake.
I know most of the #songbirds have migrated and haven't returned yet, so I don't expect to hear them. But only last week, I was regularly seeing a LOT of #birds , and hearing lots of chirping. The bird food & bread scraps I often put out for them in the morning were always eaten before lunch.
In past years, the sky would have had lots of birds flying overhead in this first warmth. I would hear lots of chirping.
This whole day, I heard only SILENCE.
4 of the past 5 days, bird food was left uneaten. Bread scraps were only eaten by the nighttime animals.
Today, I only saw one lonely #sparrow, behaving abnormally by hiding in my flower pot, right next to my door-- and near me. None of his friends ever appeared.
I hope I'm mistaken. I hope this is not due to #BirdFlu .
Here's a lovely smile for you :-)
Bird interrupts David Attenborough | Attenborough's Paradise Birds - BBC
(1.5 minute narrated video with a beautiful bird. Subtitles like "laughter" and "music" are the bird showing off its loud sounds, LOL)

One more #MondaysAreForTheBirds post for the day. This is one of the bluebird couples that frequents our feeders and waterer. Bluebird nesting season is quickly approaching

I was going through some very old photos yesterday and found something exciting for tomorrow’s #Wrensday post.
As a happy reminder to the birding crew, I’m planning to boost all Wrensday content because I love this hashtag.
What’s Wrensday? Another genius hashtag Mastodonians came up with. We’re featuring photos of the many wrens across the world on Wednesdays. I hope you’ll participate.
Here's a white-breasted nuthatch, from Lees Summit, Missouri in 2016.
These birds are great fun to watch as they can run up, AND DOWN tree trunks thanks to that long backwards-facing claw, called the hallux. They also tend to have a lot of personality.
It doesn't happen often, but I sure do love when the Mourning Doves come and just lounge around our bird buffet.
They remind me of my late Grandmother. She loved 'em. And they are one of few birds here in the #KC-ish area that were also in Phoenix when I was a kiddo with her.
Photo from around this time last year.
A little under a year ago I bought a used #NikonZ7ii. And it’s mostly been a pain in the butt. #Mirrorless photography isn’t fun. Again dealing with soft images. Assumed lens problem so I put it on my old beloved D7200.
Nope. Lens is OK. So it’s the body or maybe my rough handling has messed up the FTZ adapter. Anyway, here’s a dumb invasive (but still pretty!) European Starling from my old trusty d7200. (Straight off camera and cropped. I don’t do much editing)
Happy #Wrensday!
I love this silly hashtag and our goofy Carolina Wrens. I think they have the most "personality" of all the birds I've encountered thus far.
Doing what I can to help make wrensday "a thing" with the birding community here. I could use your help...
You tag it, I'll boost it.
One benefit of the winter weather here in the #KC-ish area is that the White Crowned Sparrows have appeared at our bird buffet. There are a few hanging out right now. Such cool "birbs."
This is a photo from almost exactly a year ago. Camera stuff is downstairs and my window is dirty.

Hey, frozen and/or snowed in friends. It’s a hard time to be a bird out there.
If you can, your feathered friends need food, but more importantly they could use some unfrozen water. They can eat snow, but melting it lowers already low body temps and burns calories needed for survival.
BONUS: You’ll likely be the only game in town and get quite a show
It’s been absolutely blissful being removed from almost everything for weeks. #Antarctica was incredible and reinvigorating. Here’s a pic of a #chinstrappenguin posing in its colony from a couple days ago. #nature #penguin #Birdstodon #birds
Given that I have so few wren photos of my own, I'm ready and willing to boost YOUR #Wrensday content. Let's get this party started.
