#TIL brin, noun

▪ One of the radiating sticks of a fan. The outermost are larger and longer, and are called panaches.

▪ A single silkworm thread extruded from the gland, before it has formed a bave.

#TIL "It was never mandatory in England for a woman to take her husband’s surname. There are historic cases of married women retaining their birth name as a professional name. Ann Fisher (1719-78), the daughter of a Northumberland yeoman, wrote books on education. She continued to publish as Ann Fisher after her marriage (age 32) to the printer Thomas Slack (age 28), and throughout their personal and professional partnership of more than a quarter of a century in a Newcastle printing house.
There were even circumstances where a husband would take his wife’s surname, if her wealth was substantially larger than his. "

#TIL another aspect of anti-atheist bias in the US: one company's packages with "atheist" labeling took longer to arrive and were more likely to disappear. This did not happen in the US.
And yet Christians, despite having overwhelming political power in the US, insist they're the ones being discriminated against.

#TIL :

My doc has me taking some absolutely enormous potassium supplement pills. The first couple resulted in a lot of coughing and retching before I finally got them down.

A web search uncovered advice to take them with yogurt or applesauce. I just tried one with a spoonful of applesauce and it was amazing -- slid right down on the first try, no trouble!

I have no idea why applesauce works so much better than just using water or whatever I'm drinking, but that sure was a handy tip to learn.

As a Russian native-speaker I spell "GIMP" as "ˈɡʲimp" (Gh Ee Mph) and "XMPP" as "Eks Am Ph Ph" for decades. And #TIL that these words sound like something other words for English natives :dragnsarc:

At least I had some fun with "Pidora OS" (distrowatch.com/table-mobile.p)

For Russian native it sounds like "The Faggot's OS" because sounds for word "pidor" resembles the Russian slur, which could be translated as "faggot".

Today I learned that an arena is called an arena because when warriors were jousting in old amphitheaters like The Colosseum, they were fighting on a wooden floor with sand on top — likely because sand makes cleaning up blood a lot easier — and sand in latin is “harena”, which later became “arena”.

So the next time you go to an arena to see a concert, you may be going to an amphitheater with a sandy floor… Or if not, the arena is really not an arena in the original sense of the word.

Costasiella kuroshimae (also known as a leaf #slug sea sheep, or leaf sheep). #fascinating #animals capable of « #kleptoplasty » : they can sequester the chloroplasts (the organelles where #photosynthesis occurs) from the algae they eats, and let them produce energy for themselves. Their #genome integrates genes useful for the maintenance of the photosynthetic apparatus. All this, while also being cute! (Yes, the black dots are eyes) #science #til #nature

I just sent in some feedback to #Linear asking for tables with independently sortable and re-orderable columns, because HOW ELSE would you want to see tickets? (No, their "List" view doesn't come CLOSE to cutting it)

I got a response that said "this isn't something that has come up before".

So #TIL no one *actually* uses #Linear for work. I cannot believe no one has ever wanted this before.
