It's that old. No one really knows why, except that Babylonians believed seven was a lucky number.</p><p>Other week lengths have been used by other cultures, and the seven day week may have been independently developed in other cultures, but the seven day week is essentially older than history. We, of course, use it because we got it from Judaism via Christianity via Rome, but there are scholars who believe that the Jewish calendar is influenced by the Babylonians. In any case, the world uses seven day weeks because of Christian cultural hegemony, with a side of Islam also doing it so there's not really a whole lot of competition.</p><p>It's more complicated than that, but those are the essentials. We have a seven day week because Babylonians liked the number seven. It's a stupid system.</p>
