Johannes
Today I learned that (optic) computer mice relay movement by taking thousands of tiny images of the underlying surface and computing the pixel shift.
Essentially, minute patterns (scratches, irregularities, fibres etc.) are illuminated by the little light shining from the mouse underside - which is why most optical mice don’t work well on reflective surfaces. A camera then (constantly) captures monochrome images of only a few pixels. As the mouse is moved, subsequent images will have some overlap in one direction - which then allows calculating the path the cursor should take on the fly. Not only does this process have to be very fast, everything including the illumination is handled so energy efficiently that it can run a year on an AA battery.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Optical_mouse

Even though I use algorithms to calculate how images have shifted position at work nearly every day (multiplexed microscopy), I had never realised this was how optical mice work. Now I have newfound respect for the little buggers.

#til
