The South London suburb of Nunhead is said to get its name from a pub, The Old Nun's Head. The pub, in turn, is reputed to have got its name from the notion that the mother superior of a local convent was beheaded during the Dissolution of the Monasteries. Her head is said to have been placed on a spike on the village green, on the spot where the pub now stands. Though there is little evidence to support this claim, there may have been a convent in the area with links to an Augustinian priory in Shoreditch. The cellars of the pub are said to be haunted by the nun and to contain bricked-up tunnels that once led to the convent. #history #London #gothic #psychogeography #weird #folklore #ghosts #paranormal #pub

Great afternoon spent at a pub halfway between us and @mathzy at the annual beer and folk festival in aid of MNDA. Many ales and ciders consumed, money spent on the charity, entertainment from folk musicians and Morris dancers giving their time for free. Always such a great event each year.
