Venya (he/him/dude) 🇺🇦<p>Haven't booted to Windows 10 on my laptop but once (by accident) since I installed Debian on a second drive in December.</p><p>So now I'm wiping the Windows drive. Testing <a href="https://musicians.today/tags/Pop_OS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Pop_OS</span></a> which is definitely a stupid name but we will see how it goes. </p><p>Will either Dual Boot or Duel Boot, depending on how smart this installer is.</p>

Shuffling of USB disks around had made my Rocky Linux boxes fail to boot because they were trying to mount disks that had gone missing.</p><p>I picked up a copy of POP_OS and booted into the test drive desktop. Amazingly, it let me su to root so I could mount the hosts / partition and edit FSTAB to make the USB UUID’s noauto.</p><p>Thanks guys. <br><a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/pop_os" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>pop_os</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/ServerRecovery" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ServerRecovery</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/BravoZulu" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>BravoZulu</span></a></p>

Eugenia L<p>Every panel applet on <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Cosmic" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Cosmic</span></a> takes about 33 MB of RAM each, resulting to Cosmic using 2.4 GB of RAM on a cold boot. That is excessive for a brand new, "clean" DE, and on par with <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Windows" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Windows</span></a> (that has a history of 40 years that needs to carry with it).</p><p>I honestly don't understand why it's like that. Scott Williams 🐧<p>Today I need to figure out why the Cosmic launcher for terminal, etc., worked on the Pi400 but not on the Pi500. I suspect it's most likely some kind of race condition and not hardware related, but it's possible there's some kind of hardware acceleration in the Cosmic compositor that isn't playing well. Non-Cosmic apps still launch fine.</p><p>It's very close to being generally usable.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/pop_os" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>pop_os</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/Linux" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Linux</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/RaspberryPi500" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>RaspberryPi500</span></a></p>

Was it a simple and straightforward process - LOL, no. But success nonetheless!</p><p>I should also note that this is still alpha and it's pretty but it's still a bit rough and buggy. Not something I would recommend right now if you're not an experienced Linux user willing to go on an adventure. </p><p><a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/Linux" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Linux</span></a></p>

Does it boot on the <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/RaspberryPi500" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>RaspberryPi500</span></a> and the answer is - YES! And much, much, much faster! @Melissabeartrix @jackyan @stevendbrewer OFC there are countless options.

Were it not for your mother but like a child, I'd consider pointing at #RaspberryPiOS or for gamers to #pop_OS, for some really old machine I'd point at #BunsenLabsLinux and #TinyCore or for some "Guest Computer" I'd recommend #PorteusKiosk...

  • I stick with #UbuntuLTS for the most part because it's convenient, gets 5 years free updates after release and also has a big, beginner-friendly community and likely gets support by 3rd parties when it comes to commercial software...

But my priorities may not he yours so it's good to have options on the table.

  • #Dayon is just convenient because it doesn't require some central service to be up but just the supporting person to have like a (dynamic) DNS or static IP configured as it acts like a "Reverse-VNC-Server" and is very user-friendly on the "Assisted" side of things by just asking for IP/domain & port to connect to.
