Excellent sermon today, closing out a series titled “Jesus is NOT John Wayne.” Among other things, there’s been a strong subtext of “yes, please, vote—but don’t mistake a candidate for a hero, and don’t expect your vote to save you. We have to save each other.”
Lots of food for thought throughout on the differences between a hero and a savior, too. Much to ponder.

More Light Presbyterians traces its history through two distinct pathways, the earliest is through a sign held up at Presbyterian General Assembly in 1974 by the Rev. David Sindt “is anyone else out there gay?” That sign led to the formation of Presbyterians for Gay Concerns, which later became Presbyterians for Lesbian and Gay Concerns. The second is after the 1978 Presbyterian ruling that openly LGBTQIA+ people could join and participate in Presbyterian churches, but not serve in official leadership of the church. Several Presbyterian churches took issue with this ruling and declared themselves to be “More Light” Churches because there was “yet more light to shine forth on the scriptures” on, at the time, homosexuality.
The second webinar in this series will focus on nationalism and Christian Zionism and explore reasons for heightened nationalism around the globe. The discussion will recognize the chasm in church theology and ask: Are we a church that cares about the poor and oppressed, or are we an “empire” church? How have Christian Zionist ideologies led to giving Zionism — a political ideology — a pass by mainline churches? How are Americans complicit in the impunity Zionism enjoys today, which has led to the demonization of an entire people — Palestinians — who are now paying for European sins against their own Jewish populations
More Light Presbyterians is a non-profit organization dedicated to allowing the full participation of LGBTQIA+ people in life, ministry, and witness of the Presbyterian Church (USA) and in society. You are welcome here, and you are loved.
