Sam Bush provided the comfort music I needed after a couple days of storm cleanup with no power. (We're fine. My heart goes out to those who are really suffering, including my peeps in the NC mtns.)
In our latest podcast, Leah Song of Rising Appalachia explains why the social justice-driven band decided to dial things back and record an album of songs that influenced them: Folk and Anchor. There are covers you might not expect, and that sends a message of its own.
New video from Hank, Pattie, and the Current. Love the sound of this song. For fans of #bluegrass #newgrass & #Americana.
@LostReflector have seen them live twice now ~ they are focusing almost solely on very traditional #bluegrass (in intentional contrast to the #newgrass #jamgrass #spacegrass #classicalgrass most of them do in their other bands) it's cool to see their excellence in this more historical genre also
Sam Bush at Smith Opera House.
Newgrass legend still an absolute treat to see live. Friend changed his mind last second which nudged me to get there and glad we did, great show.
@LostReflector that cracks me up too, although I think Billy says it genuinely ~ the man is an encyclopedia of music, and does differentiate between #Bluegrass #OldTime #NewGrass #Country #Rock and more (his own songs don't often follow the traditional bluegrass song structure exactly but of course do contain elements of it) ~ at last count the #BillyStrings setlist catalog was over 500 songs and counting (many are covers of course) ~ he's a walking talking jukebox
I am somewhere in the middle of listening to #johnhartford's studio albums, and man... does he ever have a bad one? Like, the 'worst' so far is the Glittergrass album with the Dillards, which still has this all timer [1]
Do I have to go all the way to the 80's John? (Except, I know Gum Tree Canoe hits for me?)
Anyways, enjoy John's take on the Rolling Stone's "Love in Vain" [2] w/ Sam Bush and Benny Martin.

@mrcompletely @bourgwick I was stoked when I stumbled across this AND Clements-Hartford-Holland in the miscellaneous section of a used record bin last year! I'm intrigued by #jazz giant Dave Holland's jaunts into progressive #bluegrass. The only other session I know of is on John Hartford's Morning Bugle, a masterpiece. Holland's lyricism blends so well with those #newgrass pioneers. He'd be a great fit with David Grisman #dawgmusic
#NowPlaying - elegant all-star #newgrass session from 1974 starring (to my ears) #jazz bass heavy dave holland & the sweeping melancholia of #fiddler vassar clements. hot pickin', sure, but more importantly beautiful. picked this up today & on my 4th listen.
