Hare Raising
Scampering along, springing over the heather.
Captions welcome...
A mountain hare on a hillside, from a great day out with a friend last week.
Mountain Hare
From a great few hours spent watching and admiring this obliging individual on the hills of the Scottish Highlands.
They have such beautiful eyes.
Mountain Hare
A handsome fella cleaning his paws and nose, during a workshop today on the hills of the Scottish Highlands.
Hey There!
A mountain hare waves at us from its form, on a snowy hillside in the Scottish Highlands.
Mountain Hare
Sitting in a form it had dug out of the deep snow. The snow gathering on its pelage shows just how well insulated it is.
Mountain Hare
Yawning.
They don't do a great deal during the day, at this time of the year, so seeing one do this, is a good thing.
Mountain Hare
A habitat shot of one, from a workshop this past week. She chose a fantastic form to settle in for us to photograph her.
Mountain Hare
She posed beautifully for us today. From a lovely, unseasonably still day here in the Scottish Highlands. Gorgeous creature.
Mountain Hare
Giving us a rather quizzical look, from its lofty form high on a hillside.
From a recent workshop I was running, here in the Scottish Highlands.
Mountain Hare.
Taken whilst trying not to slide back down the hillside in the deep snow.
Such hardy creatures. The hares, not me.
Mountain hare, waving at us.
Mountain Hare.
From a rather blustery workshop today, here in the Scottish Highlands.
We were able to approach two hares which were both relaxed with us being there.
This one spent quite some time grooming, which was lovely to observe.
Mountain Hare - from a stroll up the hills today. It was bitterly cold, but the hares were relaxed and allowed me to get close enough.
Taken with a Canon R5 and RF100-500mm lens.
Always lovely to see in the Highlands Of Scotland.
Mountain Hare.
Taken a few winters ago during a photography workshop I was running here in the Scottish Highlands.
It was difficult conditions for photography as it would be bright sunshine one minute, then gloomy the next, and we had several very heavy blizzards which made focusing on the hare tricky.
But the hare was clearly well insulated, with fresh snow settling on it and not melting.

Mountain Hare.
I've not had the pleasure of spending a day in the company of mountain hares for a few years now, but today made up for it.
Wonderful weather, soft light, great clients and magical subjects. #bliss

Mountain Hare.
After spending some time chasing females around the hillsides, this hare descended the slope and sat down near where I was watching from.
It wasn't in the least bothered by my presence, and remained for a moment, soaking up the hint of warmth from the winter sunshine, before ambling off, down the hill further to dig out a form, for a snooze.
Sitting Pretty.
A tiny mountain hare leveret sitting bolt upright, ears raised to listen to every unusual sound it hears. It pays to be ultra cautious when you're this small.
I photographed this gorgeous little character for over an hour on a summer's day, on a hillside in the Scottish Highlands.
Brown when growing up, but white in time for the winter. Incredible creatures.
